The is my mother but she had a stroke last July and I don';t know what to do with this car but she loves it. I can';t out the driver side unless I let the window down. How do I stop a oil leak under a BMW735I 1990?
your oil filter is looseHow do I stop a oil leak under a BMW735I 1990?
E32 body with M30 engine. Source oil leak can be oil pan, timing chain cover gasket, valve gasket, or rear main seal.
For oil pan leak, you can tighten the bolts or you can take the oil pan gasket out, put a new gasket in, and redo the bolts. You will not be able to slide the whole pan out because of subframe(Not enough space between the two). You should be able to lower the pan enough to replace the gasket, but will not be able to slide the pan out without lifting the engine.
Timing chain, you will have to take the fan clutch out, and remove the timing chain cover, and reinstall with a new gasket.
Rear main seal, you will need to drop the driveshaft, undo all torx bolts that is holding transmission. Remove the starter, and lower the transmission. You can take out the oil carrier assembly and push out the old rubber ring, and press in a new rubber gasket in its place. It takes about 10 hours for this job,
Valve cover is simple. Remove spark plug wires, take valve cover off. take out the old gasket, put a new gasket and close. takes an hour.
First thing to do is determine what kind of oil is leaking and the general location. Put a few sheets of newspaper down under the engine and transmission. Next morning look at the newspaper. If the spot(s) is dark brown, it is probably engine oil. If red, transmission or power steering. Try to correlate the location of the spot on the newspaper with something on the car to further isolate the problem.
It may be as simple as the oil drain plug or filter being loose. Could be the valve cover gasket or crankshaft seal. Could be a transmission or a power steering seal.
The car is 27 years old (you didn't state the mileage but I'll guess that it is in the mid to upper 100,00 mi range). I would suggest taking the car to a competent mechanic (ask your friends or co-workers for a reference). Have them go over the car and give you an estimate for the repairs. Then you will be in a position to make an informed decision.
(Forget about additives or ';Mouse Milks'; they don't work and you are just wasting time and money.)
What does ';out the driver side'; have to do with an oil leak?
Put some stop leak in the crank case
that sounds like a loose filter, I just changed out my oil and you have to just jack up the car and tighten the filter up as best as you can.. or just take it to your dealer
