I have an oil leak that appears to be coming from the front of the engine. where would it most likely be from?

1973 buick 455. fuel pump, valve covers, oil pan.I have an oil leak that appears to be coming from the front of the engine. where would it most likely be from?
Back then they used a lot of cork gasket material and mechanics tended to over torque them causing them to crush. The valve cover is the most common of these areas. Another area is the fuel pump its self, internally the diaphragm would develop a small tear and leak from the weep hole in the side. This is usually very hard to find, duct tape over the hole and if the leak stops for a day, you have found your leak. Where the timing cover meets the oil pan is another area that is prone to leaks. Silicone has been used to prevent this problem, but sooner or later it too looses its seal and begins to leak. Hope this helps, Good LuckI have an oil leak that appears to be coming from the front of the engine. where would it most likely be from?
IF IT IS IN THE FRONT OPEN THE HOOD AND LOOK CLOSELY AT THE FRONT OF THE VALVE COVERS--INTAKE MANIFOLD AND OIL PAN. YOU COULD ALSO SPRAY WITH A DEGREASER SUCH AS GUNK--HOSE OFF CLEAN AND SEE WHERE THE FRESH OIL APPEARS.
most car or engine when it leak in front while it is park comes from the crankshaft seal, camshaft seal, oil pump seal these seals are mostly situated infront of an engine.
Could be the front crank shaft seal. On an older engine it could be coming from any where.

You could re tighten the bolts around the pan but not to tight. but most likely need a new gasket
tighten bolts a bit, new gasket, mabe loosen bolts a bit and shove some liquid gasket in there

How common is it for valves to leak oil into the cyclinder?

we always assume piston rings first, but what causes the valves to start leaking oil and is it more easily prevented than ring damageHow common is it for valves to leak oil into the cyclinder?
Depends on how old and how many miles auto has on it. The valves don't leak its the valve stem seals that leak. There are some oil additives that can help the problem for awhile but you will eventually have to replace.Which can be done without pulling the heads off.But to answer your question as to what causes them to leak is not changing the oil often enough and some types of oil are not as good as others and high miles. Hope this helps you. Good luck. How common is it for valves to leak oil into the cyclinder?
I DO AGREE WITH THE ANSWER GIVEN. IN ADDITION TO THAT, ONE SIGN OF VALVE SEAL FAILURE IS WHITE SMOKE WHEN U FIRST START THE ENGINE JUST FOR FEW SECONDS. Report Abuse

THIS HAPPNED RECENTLY WITH MY 1.8L JETTA CAR. I ALREADY REPLACED THE SEALS AND THE WHITE SMOKE NO MORE. Report Abuse

My Chevelle did this for a while and same with my truck both with Chevy 350, the number 8 cylinder would always leak a drop of oil when the engine cooled, then when starting it id get a small puff of blue smoke and it would clear out and run fine, to fix this add air pressure to the cylinder with both valves closed to hold them in place and then use valve spring compressor to take out the keepers and remove the spring and then replace the valve guide seal and put it back together. number 8 cylinder is under oil most of the time in the Chevy 350.
NO it is not suppose to leak.

What makes you think there's oil leak? If you have leaking fuel injectors the spark plug would look wet (like oil) too.

===

The valve SEAL leaks as they get older. Some motor oils (high mileage oil) have additive to swell up the valve seals.

Good Luck...
You didn't say anything about mileage on the motor. A high mileage motor can have the valve stems wear away enough for oil to leak past them into the cylinders. Rings will not be far behind.
could be as simple as a valve cover gasket leaking oil down the spark plug tubes, more likely than leaking from the valves themselves.
valve stem seals would be a bigger problem. prevention is not so easy. a head job and routine maintenance.
the seal and not so common really nothing to do

thanks down there couldnt think of it

I have a major oil leak! How do I fix, and what was cause?

An oil line connecting underneath, to same housing part for my oil filter? PLEASE HELP!!!I have a major oil leak! How do I fix, and what was cause?
you might just have to tighten the oil filter or plug.I have a major oil leak! How do I fix, and what was cause?
You will definately have to fix that,a replacement pipe is easiest.dont drive till its fixed otherwise engine will blow.
there is a gasket and o-ring where the adapter bolts to the block. I have seen the o-ring get old and break a lot of times. you do need to clean it and make sure that is where it is coming from. if so, just remove oil filter and 2 bolts underneath to get to o-ring.
Year make and model would be helpful.

What your describing sounds like an oil cooler line and having them leak at the oil filter adapter is not unusual.

My guess is that your driving a GM pick-up of some kind.

If the oil is running out it would be best to have it towed to a shop and repaired.

An engine is a terrible thing to waste.
Clean With Carb Or Brake Cleaner To Make Sure Whats Leakig,Replace Leaking Part
I just went thru this! The lines are pre-formed and snap into the filter housing. These are oil cooler lines that run to the radiator. The best and cheapest fix is to eliminate the housing that the lines snap into. Replacing the lines was a pain in the azz. Next time I will get rid of the housing for sure!
oil line / oil filter your sure?

wipe all parts off near the area

if you know what your doing , try spraying at the area with good and ask your auto part store for sure what to use ie something that will evaporate quickly and not harm other parts to clean with

it maybe other parts related .... regardless ... repair asap

live long
Any competant mechanicaly inclined guy or girl should be able to fix it. it's probably just a blown hose, but if it's specially curved you may hav eto hit the dealership. If it's an older car they may still have the part in stock, or try your local auto chiain store, and have them try to look it up. P.S. As my friend here said,, DO NOT drive the vehicle or even START it untill this problem is fixed, AND the oil level is topped back up to the full mark on the dipstick
just tighten you oil filter up

  • I have a 1992 nissan maxima and i have had a oil leak since i bought the car. What could be the problem?

it seems to get worse day by day.I really dont have the money to repair it if its really expensive.Does anybody have any adivise on what i should do? Thanks everyone for your feedback!!I have a 1992 nissan maxima and i have had a oil leak since i bought the car. What could be the problem?
Most likely cause of the problem is oil is leaking out of the valve covers. Those gaskets are only 18 years old... But with out looking at and under that car I cannot say for sure. How many miles on the car how long have you owned it? Advice fix the oil leak or trade in the car. But by all means never let it run out of oil.I have a 1992 nissan maxima and i have had a oil leak since i bought the car. What could be the problem?
The best thing to do is look all around the top and bottom of the engine to try and see where the leak is coming from. Auto parts stores sell a spray on cleaner that will clean the engine, thus making it easier to locate any leaks...you are going to have to raise the car to look underneath

How much is it including labor to fix an oil pan leak, tranny pan leak, and tranny's cap leak?

There was a small oil leak coming from my oil pan. The mechanic (I find to be reliable) said I had 3 problems: Oil pan leak, trann pan leak, and a tranny governor's (spelling?) cap leak. He said the more serious ones were the two tranny ones and including labor and diagnostic he quoted me at $280. He said if I wanted to fix the oil pan/gasket thing leak it was an additional $370 for a total cost of $650. Is that a fair price? I just told him to fix the two tranny problems and that I would take it back there in a couple of weeks. Rip off or no?How much is it including labor to fix an oil pan leak, tranny pan leak, and tranny's cap leak?
Don't be a cheapskate. Get it fixed or you'll need a new engine and a new transmission.

Oil leak at just below the cigarette lighter in my Toyota corolla?

there is an oil leak coming from the plastic joints below the cigarette lighter in my car. it looks like a hand sanitizer. it doesnt have any color or smell. it is leaking more after i started using the ac nowadays.Oil leak at just below the cigarette lighter in my Toyota corolla?
your condensate line is clogged. raise the car and place on jackstands, then look for a rubber hose under the car in about the same area as the lighter, you need to take something to blow the line out to clear the gunk that will over time build up.

a/c stores sell a device called a gallo gun which uses CO2 to clear the line, try c.c. dickson or ferguson enterprises.

good luck.Oil leak at just below the cigarette lighter in my Toyota corolla?
    sure its not condenstation?
Are you sure it's oil? There's oil in your a/c system, a small leak could blow some oil.
i would suggest getting it looked at. Better safe than sorry.

    lighter+gas=explosion or fire
I would suggest immediately calling Ghostbusters.

Is there anything on the market to stop an oil leak.also to prevent smoke on start up. xantia diesel, m reg.

looking for something new in british car shops. Is there anything on the market to stop an oil leak.also to prevent smoke on start up. xantia diesel, m reg.
Yes and it comes in a small bottle that you just pour in the oil filler cap it has many names and OIL SAVER is just one

as to the oil smoke on start up it depends on whether it is excess diesel fuel smoke ( normally white ) or engine oil smoke this is bluey grey and tends to be slow to disperse

if your engine is high mileage ie 150,000 on a Diesel then it may be the death knoll for your engine SorryIs there anything on the market to stop an oil leak.also to prevent smoke on start up. xantia diesel, m reg.
go to halfords and ask for Winn's stop smoke in a bottle looks a bit like treacle stops it smoking a bit but probably wont cure oil leak
There is no such thing as a ';mechanic in a can'; Smoke on start up is not all that uncommon, depends on what color it is. Is it white? black? As far as the oil leak, simple things it...its leaking....find out where and fix it, pouring a can of gunk in is not the answer.
oil leaks are resolved by replacing gaskets or oil seals. a smoking engine requires either valve guides, piston rings or injector/pump overall depending on wether smoke is blue or black.

How do i use lucas oil leak stop?

It's pretty much just like the stabilizer they make and it says i should use 20% of my cars oil capacity, this means my car holds 5 quarts so all but 4 should be oil but do i have to add the extra 1 quart oil later or does this stuff just go as a substitute? im confusedHow do i use lucas oil leak stop?
I use that stuff all the time, and I LOVE it!! If you have a 5 quart capacity, Use the lucas, plus 4 quarts. (I would reccomend 10w30) Dump it in all at the same time. When using oil stabilizer, you substitute it for a quart of regular oil. Also, it is really thick gooey stuff, so I would reccoment heating it up a little before you dump it in, and DO NOT use a funnel, unless its disposable, because you will not have fun trying to clean it!How do i use lucas oil leak stop?
To stop oil seals from leaking, I have had excellent results from Berryman's Chemtool B-12 ($2.95 at Walmart). Add one can to your oil, let it run for 30 minutes and then change the oil and filter. It softens the seals, stopping the leak.
Hello, yes, if your car holds 5 quarts you just change oil, add 4 quarts of oil, and 1 quart of the lucase stop leak. It works great. I use all the lucas products, and they all work excellent. Good luck
put it in with the 4 quarts when you change oil by the way lucas is a great product

This might help you reduce it. Tighten up the screws on the engine cam cover DIAGNOLY.95 Nissan altima has engine oil leak from the front of the engine?
Sounds like a front crank seal. Have an auto repair shop check it out.

Where would an oil leak be, from where, that is, if, as your standing if front of the car, the leaked oil is?

to your left, toward the front of the car.

The right front, from the drivers point of view.

    It is a '98 infiniti i 30.

Also can I stop this leak or really slow it for a week or so, if I decide to trade it? And maybe clean/wipe the area where the leak is? I surely thank you all nowWhere would an oil leak be, from where, that is, if, as your standing if front of the car, the leaked oil is?
could be from the intake. valve cover or sending unit. i have never worked in a infinity. but squirt it down with some simple green and pressure wash it.

if you know you will get rid of the car in a week pour some brake fluid in the oil, this will expand the gasket(s) but it may only cover this up for a day or 2 and will make the leak worse. but works nicelyWhere would an oil leak be, from where, that is, if, as your standing if front of the car, the leaked oil is?
to guess, id say the intake would be the source. that, or a valve cover.. not too familiar with infiniti.. but its something in that respect
It could be a number of things such as a bad valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, oil sending unit, rear main seal and etc.
it may not be oil, it could be from your transmission cooling lines which can get dirty enough to where you think its oil. check other spots incase the oil is from the top and going down to that side of the car even the power steering would get dirty running down to come out there. if you are getting rid of the car dump some heavy duty oil in it with some engine oil treatment thats set up to stop leaks. the reason i say it that way is i do not like gas treatments oil treatment tranny treatments i have classics and i do not like that stuff in any of my vehicles. try it i hope it works. wipe everything down just like you said better yet get some gunk and go to a do it yourself car wash and clean it better, be careful most places do not want you to be doing that you know the environment and all. i do it all the time hope its easy for you. hell clean the whole engine and spray armor on it thoroughly now it looks like a new engine. go get it kid
    Shame on you!

Have an oil leak diag done on the vehicle and repair it.

Is it a good or bad idea to use oil leak additives?

Lucas Oil Is the best for oil leaks, I wouldn't use anything else.Is it a good or bad idea to use oil leak additives?
Most of them work fairly well on small leaks. Replacing gaskets and seals is very expensive and can't gurantee they will ';fix'; the leak indefinitely.

Simply retorquing the screws and bolts that hold things together will often seal the problem leaks.

A common problem in older cars is the front and read main seals and replacing these is a waste of time and money unless you replace the main bearings that center the crankshaft inside the block. When the engine ages, there is wear and tear on these internal bearing surfaces and the crankshaft will ';sag'; or settle when the car is parked and this stresses the rubber seals on the crankshaft making them stretch and leak.

The only respctable gasket replacement I would consider is the valve cover gasket or anything that separates the coolant from the oil like an intake manifold gasket.

The oil leak stop additives are for relatively small leaks or drips. They will not stop a large leak that requires you to add a quart of oil and day or week to the crank case.

Good Luck!Is it a good or bad idea to use oil leak additives?
It might be a temperory fix but it depends on the main problem could be many things and i need more info to answer
no!those products are for theives and sheisters who are looking for a quick fix so they can sell a used car to some poor sucker.the seal conditioners actually swell any and all rubber componets o-rings,seals,etc. the problem is they never stop swelling the rubber. i own a transmission shop and i see this all the time it works for a little while then catastrophic failure!a little 1 in. diameter o-ring comes out about ten in. diameter. get your leak fixed the right way if you are keeping your car.if you are selling it be honest with the prospective buyer.
they're OK to use. it's usually just a rubber conditioner to soften seals. won't hurt anything, just don't get your hopes too high on it fixing the leak.
If you are talking about the A/C it won't hurt a thing so go ahead and install the leak test, hope this helps.

What's the best way to find a coolant leak and and oil leak (besides visual inspection)?

They make leak detector kits that have a special dye and an inspection light.First the dye is dumped into the coolant system, motor oil,or trans fluid. Then after running the vehicle a while you inspect for leaks (in the dark) with an ultraviolet light (blacklight). This will help you to be able to see the leak easily. What's the best way to find a coolant leak and and oil leak (besides visual inspection)?
Our parts department sells tracer dye for motor oil (not sure about coolant, might be able to use it though). Just put it in with the motor oil, drive it normally for a day or so then get some blacklight goggles and a blacklight and you will be able to see where the oil is seeping from. Thats a better way to find a tricky/hidden leak without looking at every nook and cranny. Good luck! What's the best way to find a coolant leak and and oil leak (besides visual inspection)?
there is no way to find a oil leak without findind were its coming from. its only a couple of places oil can actually leak from. the same with coolant its only a couple of places it can leak from. you should be able to spot these easily.
get your engine steam cleaned run car then check for oil leak if no leak spotted place paper or some kind of board under the engine it will give you a rough idea where its coming from if there is still no leak you might be burning it up . with your water if you can get a pressure cap from the scrappies drill hole in the centre big enough to put pressure valve in pump up the pressure with bike pump look for leaks
They make a pressure test for the radiator, And you have to look good for a oil leak your self. hope this helps.

Theres an oil leak from under the car approx where the rear axle is.it is coming out quite fast.any ideas?

it is a ford escort diesel 1.8.1996.i had a l

slight patch of oil on the drive this week but now its quite significant since i topped up my oil.In approx 3hrs it has leaked about half pint?Theres an oil leak from under the car approx where the rear axle is.it is coming out quite fast.any ideas?
Could it be diesel from the fuel tank?Theres an oil leak from under the car approx where the rear axle is.it is coming out quite fast.any ideas?
The Ford Escort is a front wheel drive, front mounted engine car. There should not be any oil leaking from the back of the car, there's no source there to leak. Are you *absolutely* sure it's oil that is leaking and not brake fluid?

If the car is parked on a level surface, and the fluid is really coming from the rear of the car, check the fluid reservoir on the master cylinder. It's more likely to be brake fluid.

If the car is presently parked on a slope, it's possible that the oil is coming from up front and running down the back of the car before it falls to the ground.

Make sure the car is on a level surface. Grab a flashlight and peer underneath the vehicle. Wet sources are generally easy to trace. Just follow the dampness to it's source.

In any event, you've got something that may be a minor issue, or major. I would recommend that you have it towed to a mechanic and diagnosed. If it's a serious oil leak you could damage the engine by driving it, if it's the brakes you run the risk f not being able to stop the car.
If you are loosing oil that fast you definitely need to get it into a shop for service and soon!

If the recommended repair is expensive,

On any major repair I recommend that you get 3 or 4 estimates from local service facilities unless you are lucky enough to have a shop with an absolutely stellar reputation available. Compare the estimates and choose one of the middle estimates. My reasoning for this is the low estimate either left something out or worse is deliberately giving a low ball estimate to get you in and then when your car is all torn apart they find all sorts of critically important things wrong with it which run your bill through the roof. Do the leg work and be an informed car owner. No reliable technician or shop will give an estimate for repair site unseen except as a budgetary estimate which will be a range from the middle average to the unusual high end possible.
You are going to be having a major expense soon. I would have it towed to a reputable mechanic and have them pick it up and check the oil pan and filter. Do not drive it there.
a ford escort doesn't have a rear end, it's front wheel drive. you must mean the trans axle or transmission. get it on a lift, be sure you check the fluid level before you drive it.
That sounds like a drive axel seal is bad there the drive shaft goes in to the rear end.
three hour and it leak a pint its not a small leak best you get it up on a lift so one can see where its from

  • Why would my motorcycle leak oil right underneath the header pipe after doing a valve adjustment?

looks like it is coming from either the head pipe or head gasket. just did a valve adjustment for the first time but did not think it was that tough! Not sure if I did something wrong Everything looked right and was within spec. the bike only has six thousand miles on it . It is a 2001 kawasaki zx-9rWhy would my motorcycle leak oil right underneath the header pipe after doing a valve adjustment?
The valve cover gasket is the problem, as oil leaks from valve cover gasket around spark plug hole, it flows out a hole that was made just for that reason. It comes out just below the header pipe. Its a drain from spark plug hole so fluids wont build up around spark plugs. Why would my motorcycle leak oil right underneath the header pipe after doing a valve adjustment?
It is leaking oil onto the header pipes, and then continues downward as so many things do. So look above the pipe to find the leak, follow the oil back to its source.

What does it mean when they say you have an oil leak from timing chain tensionor o ring on a 04 corolla?

what should i replace? the belt squeaks, looking for parts on autozone. they wanted to charge me 368.19 for timing chain tensionor , engine drive belt 137.96, engine air filter 26.95What does it mean when they say you have an oil leak from timing chain tensionor o ring on a 04 corolla?
Why do you want to replace the tensioner?

Is it not possible to just replace the o-ring that is leaking? The parts cost should be significantly less.

Having said that, if your complaint is that the belt is noisy, please confirm that the timing chain tensioner is the correct part to refer to. A leaking timing chain tensioner o-ring will not have any effect on the accessory belt, unless the oil is leaking onto the belt.

In addition to the chain tensioner, there is also a belt tensioner for the accessory belt. This belt tensioner has a hydraulic damper that can leak. This would be unlikely to produce a squeaking noise though. What does it mean when they say you have an oil leak from timing chain tensionor o ring on a 04 corolla?
I would take it to a Toyota dealer to have the oil ring replaced and ask them about other problems you are having and ask them what it would cost to have them fixed
Timing chain don't use ';timing chain tensioner'; Only timing belt does.

if it's a timing chain, then it's the timing chain guide.

    Craftsman Lawn Tractor Oil Leak?

I have a LT 4000 Craftsman Lawn Tractor, I think it is about 10 to 15 years old. Its leaking oil really bad out the bottom right around were the shaft comes out. Can someone tell me where it might be coming out and how to fix this.Craftsman Lawn Tractor Oil Leak?
You have a seal leak, but since the tractor is very old and new seal might not stop it becasue of wear and tear around the case.

In any event it will not hurt to replace the seal since they are inexpensive and easy to install.

You will need a extension socket to reach up in the hole located in the pully and unscrew that.

In some models you have to remove the pully before the engine can be removed. The newer models come with a wide enough hole to remove the engine and pully all at once.

Once you remove that pully clean the shaft area real good and take a screw driver and slide it inside the oil ring adjacent to the shaft and pop it out.

Slide it off and get a new one and use a pvc pipe that will size up to the oil ring and tap the new in place evenly.

Hopefully the damage will be minor and the ring will stop the oil leak.

Put your engine back on and bolt it down all reverse procedure and happy mowing.Craftsman Lawn Tractor Oil Leak?
I don't think that it is hard to change the shaft seal. The motor may have to come off the mower to get to it. You can go to outdoordistributers.com and type in the engine model number. It will give you an expoded view of the engine and the part number.
there is a seal which keeps the oil from leaking around the shaft. it's rubber and need to be replaced. if you have never done such work, have someone who knows how do it. while you are at it, consider having the engine rebuilt entirely. the expense is not that much and will give you a like new motor which should last another 10 yrs.
Cristanine is absolutely correct in everything he said! Whoever gave him a thumb-down need to reconsider their ill-chosen vote.

If you follow the directions from Cris, the oil problem will be reparied.

I had a oil change done on my 1992 Toyota Camry and I was told i have a transmission and engine oil leak.?

How much does it usually cost to fix a problem like that.I had a oil change done on my 1992 Toyota Camry and I was told i have a transmission and engine oil leak.?
It depends on what part is leaking: Replace a leaking gasket or replace a leaking engine seal. Front and rear engine seals are pretty involved jobs to replace on the Camry, but the oil pan gasket and transmission pan gasket is a bit easier to replace. There are other parts that can leak, so we cannot tell how much work you need or that one replacement will do the trick. If they couldn't, or wouldn't tell you where they thought the leak originated, and this was one of those ';quick change'; oil shops, they have been known to exaggerate problems and hand you a huge repair estimate. Go to a shop with experts and more trustwothy mechanics..I had a oil change done on my 1992 Toyota Camry and I was told i have a transmission and engine oil leak.?
First have it checked at a different garage by someone you trust [[Make sure he is a certified mechanic]]. The problem could be the front or rear oil seal on the transmission. It could also be the transmission oil pan gasket. If it is the gasket have the transmission oil filter and oil changed in the transmission. If there is a trans. oil seal leak also change trans. oil and filter. I believe your oil leak will probably be a engine or trans. gasket. Possibly a tappet cover gasket or a engine oil sump gasket [possibly just loose bolts]. It could also be as simple as a oil sending unit leaking. Copy this and take it with you when you have things checked.
Depends on the nature of the leak. The worst kinds are those that require the transmission to be removed because of leaky seals at the end bearings.

The greatest cost is obviously the labor which is now at $100/hr.

You are looking at a 17 year old car for which it becomes problematic to pay a large repair bill, because at that age things will continuously require repairs.

If you can afford to make a small monthly payment, I would say go get a new reliable inexpensive car with a good warranty. I believe some of the Korean cars offer that and are getting quite good in quality as well.

Remember, it is just my opinion. Good luck.
It all depends on where the leaks are and what's involved in fixing them. I assume the repair shop gave you a quote on repairs as most shops do. If you're not satisfied with their quote, check around at other shops and see what they say. Just keep in mind that sometimes you get what you pay for.
For the transmission leak, you would have to replace the gasket on the oil pan. For the engine leak, you just need a bottle of 'Stop Leak'. So it will run you about $100 to $120 parts, labour and taxes.
It's hard to say because Haven't told us exactly what part of the engine or transmission are leaking. Need more information. Anyway, good choice of car.

If you have an oil leak do you need to get the oil changed ???

I found out I had an oil leak several months ago and my mechanic told me there was not alot of oil in the engine and he filled it up for me and told me I didnt need to change the oil. If I have to fill the engine with with a quart a week do I need to get the oil changed ?? If soo are there any problems that could happen with me not changing the oil ???If you have an oil leak do you need to get the oil changed ???
I would make sure I knew where the oil was leaking from. A small leak in an oil pan gasket isn't likely to get catastrophically worse. A crank or cam seal can ultimately work all the way out, dumping ALL your oil in a hurry. That can be a problem if you're in the middle of nowhere.

Then there's the etiquette part. You're leaving a mess wherever you park. If its in your dad's driveway, you may be headed for big trouble. (Speaking as a dad who has had that problem with Junior's cars.......)If you have an oil leak do you need to get the oil changed ???
get the leak fixed you are damaging the engine
    Think about it.
if the oil is still good, then you dont have to change it, just get the leak stopped, unless they have to drop the oil pan and put on a new gasket, then they probably will put in new oil.
The best thing to do is get the underlying problem fixed. A quart of oil a week is a huge amount to be losing, and not very environmentally friendly - it could even cause the vehicle to fail its next road-worthiness test.

Get the leak fixed, and you problems will go away. If you don't change the oil on a car without a leak, the engine will wear out more quickly than it should. Servicing schedules are carefully worked out to ensure the vehicle lasts a reasonable time.
    get the oil leak fixed--

if your going to drive it as is, then change the filter as you would normally, and keep it full of oil
No, but you'd better get that oil leak fixed. Not only can it be detrimental to the engine, but the E.P.A. can have your car taken off the road for polluting the environment.
Oil lasts a lot longer than the manufactures want you to believe. As long as your adding oil all the time I would change my oil every 12,000. Better yet get the leak fixed. If the car is too old to get fixed then don't worry about changing the oil. Get some STP and add it.
well your changing your oil after a month about by putting new oil in it just replace the oil filter and try to get the leak fixed
u dumbo ,ask the mechanic to fix it
While you may be fine for a for quite a long time just adding oil it would be good to pull the drain plug to drain the sludge also some cars have magnetic plug which needs to be cleaned of metal and also your filter needs to be changed. It would be good to fix your leaks one common place for leaks that are fairly easy to fix are your valvle cover gaskets they can sometimes just be tightend also check your oil pan drain plug, filter, and oil pan for leaks these are all generally fairly easy fixes.
No, not really. But every once in awhile you should change the filter.
get the oil leak fixed and , no you dont need to change the oil, just make sure it is topped up to the right level untill it's fixed

  • Craftsman Lawn Tractor Oil Leak?

Does my car have an oil leak?

I have a 1994 Grand Marquis. It normally leaks a little bit of oil but I noticed lately the puddle looks bigger. Could something be wrong? Could this be caused by a leak?Does my car have an oil leak?
Before using any engine sealant, you need to determine where the oil is leaking from. Yes, rear main seals leak after a while and many miles. A head gasket leak will cause more problems than just a leak on the ground. It could be something as simple as a rocker arm cover gasket, oil pan gasket or a oil sending unit. Don't ever use engine sealant unless you know it's leaking from an area that you can't afford to fix at the moment or you absolutely need this car for transportation, and you need a quick fix. Some of these sealants can block oil/coolant passages if not administered EXACTLY per the manufacturers instructions.

It would be worth your time and money to take it to a reputable shop and have it diagnosed. Or you can thoroughly clean the motor with degreaser and run the engine to determine where the leak is coming from.

Major oil leak issue help after oil change from dearler?

I just had an oil change from the Mazda dealer that I purchased the car from. I bought the car ';new'; in 2005 and current have about 19K miles on it. I change the oil about every 3K-4K miles. After getting the oil change I drove out of town and after less than 100 miles the check engine light lit up soon to be followed by the oil light. The engine was making a funny sound prior to the check engine light turning on. I checked the oil and the most of the oil had leaked out. I immediately purchased motor oil from a gas station and poured it into the engine. Not too long afterwards, the engine started to smoke up. I pulled over and had the car towed to the closest Mazda dealership which was closed ( Sunday ). After being towed to the Mazda dealership the car was majorly leaking oil. What are the chances my car has sufferd through major engine damage and what routes should I take file a complaint and possibly arbitration if necessary? Thanks.Major oil leak issue help after oil change from dearler?
I agree with brmequipment and oklatom. DO NOT become high strung or confrontational over this with any of your dealings on this matter. Instruct the dealer where your car was towed to, to NOT touch anything on your car until you are present. Have a digital camera handy. Request to have you car put up in the air by a technician to check for oil pan drain plug looseness, and/or oil filter ';double gasketing';. I agree with others that engine damage has already occured. I would be 99% certain that the servicing tech has ';double gasketed'; the oil filter. Take a picture of the oil filter with the ';double gasket';, and retain for future reference if needed. In the unlikely event that the original servicing dealer refuses to settle the matter to your satisfaction, look up the contact information of the district area service rep. to set up a meeting. Sorry to hear about your dilemma.Major oil leak issue help after oil change from dearler?
Chances are 99.99999999% that damage has occurred! I would first make sure you call the Mazda head office. Not to complain - More of a notification. Mistakes happen... It's how people rectify those mistakes - Chances are the will take the right step and fix what is damaged.

If your oil-light has come on - You had no pressure and damage to the main and connecting rod bearing has occurred. Key me posted and if you run into a problem... let me know... I can advise more...

    Good Luck...
a person I work with has a VW GTI that jiffy lube did this to. he brought it back and complained the next day. They told him to bring the car back, they referred him to a garage, the garage made the call that it was their fualt and fixed the problem then release the car. So call the manager of the shop that changed you oil, then work your way up the scale of supervisors untill you get it resolved
A 2005 is still under warranty, no? 19k miles is within the 36 k range and it cannot be but two years old.

Make the Mazda dealer put in a new engine or repair the one in the car.

He forgot to put the oil drain plug back in when he changed oil or forgot to tighten it.

I'll bet $50 to a donut that the oil drain plug is missing.
chances are you may have suffered major engine damage especially if its a 4 cyl. the thing is (IF) it were caused by the dealership ( which sound like they forgot to do something) I would file something with the dealership first..after that..if they do nothing and YOU KNOW its their fault yo need to seek small claims court
You don't even know what the problem is yet, and you're already asking about complaints and arbitration?

At least wait until you know what is going on. If the dealer did something wrong in changing the oil, I'm sure they want to make it right. But it sounds like you don't even want to wait and give them a chance.

As to the chances of major engine damage, I have no idea, I can't see the car from here.
have the dealership which did the oil chanhge fix it. they caused the problemm and it is their responsibility to make good on the damage. they probably put the wrong filter on, or didn't tightenb it or the oil plug properly and your engine has been ruined. no arbitration is required or even desirable. file a claim with their insurance company and get a new motor installed or leave them the car and call the bank and the better business bureau and tell them what you have been through. if they will install a new engine, they should also provide you a loaner vehicle while yours is being repaired. don't take no for an answer. they will make it good, but only if you call their bluff when they try to say it wasn't their fault.
Have the dealer where your car was towed to inspect it for the leak,,,DO NOT LET THEM DO THE REPAIR,, you need to find out if there was negligence on the servicing dealers work. If there was, the Servicing dealer does have insurance to cover you possible damage to your engine, but first you need to find out where the leak is coming from !!!!!
Guarinteed when they pulled the old oil filter, they didn't make sure the ';O'; ring came with it.

Double up an ';O'; ring, you'll have a major leak.

Take it back to the dealer %26amp; demand satisfaction!!
Contact the dealer that did the oil change.

Where was the leak from, if you can conform that the leak is caused by the dealer they will have to pay for the repairs.
I agree with the guy from Oklahoma. Find out what is wrong before starting problems. They will do their best to make it right with you. As far as ';letting the fox loose in the hen house'; maybe this guy is a dishwasher, but I am a professional technician, never have been a dishwasher, and sometimes mistakes are made. When things happen, I make it right with the customer. (I have never ruined an engine, though). Be considerate, not confrontational and you will be surprised how far they will go to make you happy. Good Luck.
Chances are 100% that you suffered engine damage. It is very difficult to prove that the dealership is at fault.

I hate to say I told you so, but I have said this before in this forum, and I hope people will start to listen.

    CHANGE YOU OWN FRIKKIN' OIL!!

Taking your car to a dealer or any shop for an oil change is like letting a fox loose in a henhouse. These places either purposely sabotage your car, are in too much of a hurry to do things right, or are just plain incompetent. The guy that changed your oil (even at the Lexus dealer) had a previous job as a dishwasher or paperboy. You could be his first customer.

Changing your own oil forces you to get under the car for a brief inspecton also. Check for bad hoses, cracked CV boots, worn brake pads, peculiar drips, miscellaneous debris, worn tires, etc.

There can be at least 10 places from where the oil can leak. No matter which it is, the oil will drip underneath the truck because it just ';slides'; down (gravity.)

GO TO A MECHANIC!There is an oil leak in my 1996 chevy Cheyenne oil is dripping from underneath truck. Can u help me?
Without looking at it I would say oil cooler lines or the adapter where they connect at the filter. There is a kit for the adapter that dealers still stock because its so common. There are also aftermarket parts so you dont have to pay dealer prices if you dont want to.
open hood look for wet spots slide under truck with a light and look for where it might be coming from if you can see it or find it fil it and drive to a shop oil leak of any kind not great for motor most likely valve cover but still be better to have it look at but be sure you check the oil before you drive it
Did you just have a oil change done by any change? Sometimes after a oil change if the oil filter was not tightened right it will leak from the oil filter.
there are alot of places it could be leaking be more specific, i cant see your truck im not a psychic.
    No but a mechanic can!
is it 4x4 ? if so they are bad for oil cooler lines leaking

I picked up a new car for my wife today and noticed it has a oil leak?

the garage is going to have a look at it on monday should i worry or is it normally a simple fix?I picked up a new car for my wife today and noticed it has a oil leak?
I've never heard of an oil leak on a brand new car. What is the make and model? If it was a used car, they usually change the oil before they sell it. Could be a major problem or perhaps the oil filter isn't tightened properly.I picked up a new car for my wife today and noticed it has a oil leak?
Find out the cause before freaking out. It could be as simple as a loose oil filter or drain plug. Good thing you covet it right away though. Also give the place a chance to fix it before making a fuss. I know it's annoying but it happens so if they are willing to make it good, give them that much.
If you want to drive it for the weekend keep an eye on the oil level, and oil pressure. If it's a used car and it's not a HUGE amount of oil then it may or may not be a real problem depending on where it's leaking from.
It depends on where the oil is leaking from as to how difficult it is to fix. If you are driving it over the week end I advise that you keep a close eye on the oil level just in case.
If this is a brand new car it is most likely that something like an oil drain plug or oil filter has not been tightened properly. I would not worry unless your garage thinks that the car has been running with low oil for some time.
Your first mistake was to buy your wife a new car.
A new car...or new to you...is the question you need to answer for us.

A new front main seal is relatively cheap and a simple fix - pop off the radiator and whatever else is in your way, dig in there with a seal puller and pull the old one, press the new one in and you should be good to go.

One hour for a pro, a few hours and a journey of discovery for a competent amateur. Get the Haynes manual for your car and get to it; it's fun.
the only sure way you can fix it, is change it, but if you cant afford to get it fixed, use some engine stop leak, like cd2, but eventually you will have to change it. cd2 is good, but not on big leaks.
stop leaks are only for fine leaks, for bad leaks you have to bite the bullet and have the seal replaced, do it now before the leaking oil destroys the rubber fitting underneath the vehjcle
Go out and buy a bottle of AT205 sealer and try it plus follow the directions on the bottle.......

Update..........It will not clog the oil passages..........
try a bottle of engine oil stop leak or thicker oil so it leaks slower. it will still leak until the seal is replaced.
Clean the PCV valve. It may relieve internal engine pressure which may be pushing oil out.

If the leak is the valve cover gasket it's pretty simple to change, pull the cover, remove the old gasket, put on the new gasket, put the cover on. As for the valve cover itself, yes, there are metal (aluminum) valve covers available depending on what engine you have. Try:

cars today usually do not leak oil at the main axels,,,,the seals are just too good. Before you pull everything apart check to see if you are putting in too much oil in the engine. the other thing is to check the PCV valve that it is opening and relieving pressure in the oil gallery.

  • How can I stop a rear oil seal leak without having to have it replaced. I was told to put brake fluid in it.?

I was told to put a bottle of brake fluid in with the oil, it would cause the seals to swell and slow down the leak. How can I stop a rear oil seal leak without having to have it replaced. I was told to put brake fluid in it.?
Engine rear main oil seals have very little if any oil pressure to them and they are high up in the crank case. And have a drain hole between the rear main bearing and the seal letting oil drain back into the crankcase. So if it's an excessive oil leak my experience is that you either have main bearing wear or excessive pressure in the crank case. Check the engine pcv system and crank case vent too. If all is good replace the seal but don't put brake fluid in it. And don't ask the dealer. they will laugh you right out of the shop. Also be sure that's where the oil is coming from. I have seen many times where an engine had an upper engine oil leak and running down the inside of the bell housing making it appear that the rear main was leaking. How can I stop a rear oil seal leak without having to have it replaced. I was told to put brake fluid in it.?
The only real fix, is to repair it!

Anything else is throwing $$ away!
Not sure how well that would work, usually theres a rubber gasket which in that case brake fluid would not effect it at all, since thiers many rubber components in the brake system.Personally i would take it to a mechanic before you consider putting brake fluid into it , since its not the recommended fluid you would put in could be doing more harm than good. Stop Leak its a expoxy puddy brand just take a piece off and press form it into the leaking area and it should cover up or atleast help.
Sure, put brake fluid in your engine....it will fix your seal seeing as your entire engine will have to be rebuilt making it very easy to replace your seal in the process. Forget thos additives that say they can fix leaks like that, if they can swell a seal, they weaken it, and if it is already damaged, that will likely be enough to make it go out all together. There is no such thing as a ';Mechanic in a Can';.
Replacing the seal is the only effective solution. Yes it cost a few bucks but as the present one deteriorates from wear you will be pumping the oil right out the engine.

CAUTION - brake fluid in the engine is not a good idea. It has some solvent characteristics and it is flammable. You will only cause more damage to you engine.
That might be a short term { very short } Because the brake fluid makes it swell because it is breaking down the rubber and once it gets to a certain point it will fall apart and run , not leak out. Fix it right or if its a slow leak ignore it for a couple more months until the weather is better . But then get it fixed. By the way you will notice that a brake system is sealed ,, it keeps moisture out of the brake fluid because brake fluid attracts water. Not good in an engine.
I can not believe an auto tech student has suggested using a stop leak product!!!!!!!!!!

As a mechanic I have seen heaps of rear seal leaks and heaps of attempts to fix, one has proven the most effective and all others have failed.

Get it replaced, if stop leak products were so good they would be incorporated into all engine oils at the refinery stage.

    Cheers

What causes oil to leak into the mass air flow?

i recently took the intake manifold off of my 2001 vr6 jetta because i needed to replace the injectors, when i took it off i noticed it was very dirty with oil sitting in the mass airflow. i have no idea where the oil comes from. any ideas would be great. thanks. What causes oil to leak into the mass air flow?
If there's none in the air filter container..you need to figure when the oil is accumulating..during the motor's operation..or when turned off. What causes oil to leak into the mass air flow?
There's a line that goes to the valve cover to pull air in from the top of the valves. Sometimes oil can seep past the PCV where that vacuum line pulls air from the valve cover and it will get into the tube and throttle body. If you were changing the injectors, it might be from a PCV going bad and letting a lot of oil get through and mixing with the air and fuel.

As long as it's not pooled up in the intake, it should not be a problem right now. However, the PCV is easy to change and not expensive so you can change it out if you're concerned about it.

Another thing to look at is the throttle body, if there's a LOT of oil on it, then change the PCV and use carb cleaner to remove it the oil from the butterfly.
I'm wondering if you have an aftermarket oil impregnated foam air filter that was over oiled? Your vehicle uses a very sensitive hot film sensor so I would recommed an O.E. air filter only.

You should use an good quality electronic parts cleaner and clean the oil from the intake hose and the Mass Airflow sensor. You may have induced some service codes that require checking.
Normal accumulation of crankcase vapour or blow-by gasses introduced by the positive crankcase ventilation system. You don't have to worry about this until it gets excessive (air filter and housing dripping wet with oil).

What causes oil 2 leak where transmition mounts 2 engine?

I had 2 replace the clutch in my car. Shortly after my car started leaking oil, where the transmition mounts 2 the engine. Could it be the gasket? What causes oil 2 leak where transmition mounts 2 engine?
Compare the leaking oil to the engine oil and the transmission oil (use the dipsticks), if its the same as the engine oil then its probably your rear main oil seal, if its the same as the trans oil then is the front trans seal.

This will depend on the engine and trans of the vehicle as some have cover plates at the seals which may have split a gasket and started leaking.

This also depends on exactly what you did when you replaced the clutch - maybe you did something to cause the leak - left something loose???What causes oil 2 leak where transmition mounts 2 engine?
    gaskets
I agree with bkrboyz. If it's motor oil, the rear main seal is not sealing properly
rear main seal on crank damaged.
That is a possibility. Did you grease the gasket when you put it on? And made sure that everything is connected properly and nothing is to loose?
because most of the time the gasket near the trans leaks always first. Get a new gasket and go to the nearest autoparts store and find sealent for leaks when u put the gasket on put some of the sealent for transmitions.

I have a 96' Nissan Maxima and it has an oil leak?

I have to add about a quart a week it doesn't leak very big spots but it leaks everytime I park the car and leave it there for awhile. What I am really asking is how expensive can this get..It doesnt just need the bolts tightend either.I have a 96' Nissan Maxima and it has an oil leak?
could be a lot of things, but most likely a head gasket which would cost a pretty good chunk of change. Get the head gasket, timing belt, water pump etc. changed all together.I have a 96' Nissan Maxima and it has an oil leak?
It could be a leak or it could be consuming oil. You'll just have to get under there and look for leaks. And have someone follow you while you hit the gas to look for oil smoke. Fixing it could range from a quick valve cover gasket to a new engine.
It could be a bolt, but likely is the front or rear crankshaft seal. That is a fairly expensive repair. Hopefully not coming from a loose drain plug. If that drops out, bye bye engine.
well it depends on how much oil you want to keep putting in.....over time it might be cheaper to have it fix and you wont have to worry about it no more....just take to the dealer
Hard to tell how much it would cost without knowing exactly where it is leaking from.It could be an easy fix,$1-200.00,or major,$1,000.00+

How do you repair an oil leak coming from the distributor on a 1992 gmc 350 engine?

pull the distriburator out and put a new gasket under it and reinstall the distriburator. How do you repair an oil leak coming from the distributor on a 1992 gmc 350 engine?
there is an o-ring on the bottom of distributor. Before you pop out the distributor you need to make a mark where rotor is at or you will have a hard time with timing again. best bet it take shop and have it done. it should be an hour or 30mins labor. How do you repair an oil leak coming from the distributor on a 1992 gmc 350 engine?
mark the position of the rotor and dist. housing and pull it up out and change the gasket on the bottom of the dist. shaft.
Go with sleepy's plan. change both rubber o-ring and dist.base gasket. while you are back there make sure that the oil isn't coming from your oil sending unit while under pressure.
you take it out and replace the gasket
pull it put on a new seal

How much will it cost to get a oil leak on my 91 caprice fixed?

Probably more than the car is worth. How much will it cost to get a oil leak on my 91 caprice fixed?
sometimes the oil will leak from the oil pan its self or sometimes the valves which require replacing the filter between the covers. check with a mechanic for a quote! How much will it cost to get a oil leak on my 91 caprice fixed?
Where's it leaking? Around the pan/sump, around the drain plug, or higher up?

Could be anywhere from a few dollars to a complete engine rebuild.
dear Clueless your name fits... you left us clueless can be a bit more specific on where oil is coming from? Take your car to a local mechanic and ask him/her for a estimate

  • What is causing oil leak in 4runner?

The leak appears to be coming from around the back of the oil pan or where the engine meets the transmission. Left parked, oil doesn't gather on the ground, but when I run it then look at the undercarriage there is oil on the oil pan and transmission housing (from the forward momentum of the truck?). So I think it might be pressure related. Is the oil in the oil pan under pressure or could this be the rear main seal? Any ideas of how to diagnose the leak...What is causing oil leak in 4runner?
Maybe Idk..nvm sorryWhat is causing oil leak in 4runner?
Did you have any service done to the vehilce lately? If so, it could be that the service technician did not secure the oil pan properly (using correct bolt pattern, gasket not seating properly, filler bolt not bolted in all the way). Or, did you recently ran over anything or have any foreign object struck your vehicle from under?

Prolonged oil leaks could cause serious problem to your vehicle, I suggest you drive your car to have it check up as soon as possible.

Will a minor oil leak affect a smog test?

Well i'm due to get a smog test. I smell oil burning when heater is on while idling. Took it to the shop to get oil changed and they said i have a minor leak and condensation underneath. They said it's nothing major or is it?Will a minor oil leak affect a smog test?
I don't think so. My previous car had more than a minor oil leak, and it always passed smogging. (California)Will a minor oil leak affect a smog test?
condensation on the bottom is just oil seeping through the oil pan, as longs as your VALVE GUIDE(STEM) SEALS are not what is leaking you should been fine for a smog test.

How do you fix an oil leak?

you repair the part or seal that is leaking....How do you fix an oil leak?

Replace the seal between the parts that are leaking. Chewing gum is no good for this.
depends on where it's leaking from

How much are new fan belts plus installation? what about fixing an oil leak?

fan belt is for an hyundai excel 1.5l engineHow much are new fan belts plus installation? what about fixing an oil leak?
It depends on whether or not the fan belt is independent of the rest of the belts, or included in an all-in-one (serpentine) belt. If it is independent, it is probably not more than $20 and you can probably replace it yourself quite easily. If it is serpentine then the belt can be $50+, and you will need at least somebody else to help you do it, but if you don't know how to do it, then a mechanic is going to charge you a lot of money for it, you are looking at 2 hours labor easily, if not more.

The oil leak depends on the damage, whether the pan is cracked, a hose is broken, or if it is just a broken seal. Parts are probably not going to be more than $50, the labor is going to be 1-2 hours, depending on how difficult it is to remove the oil pan.How much are new fan belts plus installation? what about fixing an oil leak?
for the fan belt i think the top price is 40 dollars, and for the oil leak it depends of the damage.

What is the source of my 4Runner's oil leak?

I have a 93 4runner that has recently developed an oil leak. The oil appears to be coming from between the engine and the transmission housing. It only leaks a significant amount (i.e. oil left on the pavement) after I have driven it, so I'm wondering if there has to be oil pressure and circulation for it to leak. If I move the vehicle forward a few feet, to a clean spot of pavement, after it's sat for an hour it won't leave any oil. I'm thinking its the rear main seal? What is the source of my 4Runner's oil leak?
rear main seal or valve cover gaskets leaking down downWhat is the source of my 4Runner's oil leak?
it IS the rear main seal!

My Mechanic advised me to replace my Water Pump to help fix and oil leak, are these related problems?

Water pump keeps water flowin throught engine to keep it cool, maybe oil leak is due to engine overheating?? some times a little oil gets into water jacket too?? a causes a leak??My Mechanic advised me to replace my Water Pump to help fix and oil leak, are these related problems?
What kind of car and engine? I've never seen an engine where the coolant systems and the oil passages have anything to do with each other like that. Sounds kinda fishy to me.My Mechanic advised me to replace my Water Pump to help fix and oil leak, are these related problems?
WITHOUT THE YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL IT IS DIFFICULT TO ANSWER BUT IN MOST CASES THE ANSWER WOULD BE NO.
Year, make and model of car? Doubtful...oil passages in the block are not connected to the water passages for the water pump...I'd get a second opinion.
