Hlw can we identifi a damaged shockabsorber and a good one if there is no oil leak?

push each corner of auto up and down one at a time it should stop rather quickly that means good but if takes longer to stop thats the bad oneHlw can we identifi a damaged shockabsorber and a good one if there is no oil leak?
try to bounce it up and down, by pushing on each corner. it shouldn't keep bouncing , much at all.Hlw can we identifi a damaged shockabsorber and a good one if there is no oil leak?
Bounce/jounce test. See link.

well the way i've done it, its to press each wheel side down like bouncing the car, now the longer it keeps bouncing means that the shock absorver on that wheel its bad, also sometimes may just be the bushings, rubber links, joints ect. look for wear on this parts******check the air pressure on wheels, low pressure also causes shocks to bounce more than normal****and also causes ure vehicle to look uneven**********

Is a head gasket usually greasy or could this be a sign of an oil leak & must I replace the entire gasket?

I just took my 1996 Nissan 200sx to a mechanic because of a small oil leak that happens only when I leave the car on for a while. The mechanic said right away that the reason for the oil leak is because of the head gasket, and then he pointed out the grease. I told him if it was just a seal and he said that these types of gaskets are whole, and that I would have to replace the whole thing which would cost $200 for the part alone. Does this sound right? Is it really the gasket and if so, do I really have to replace the whole thing? How much would the labor cost for a job like this? Thank you all for your help!Is a head gasket usually greasy or could this be a sign of an oil leak %26amp; must I replace the entire gasket?
If you want to find out the cost of a head gasket, why not call an auto parts place such as AutoZone or Napa in your area to price them. All you need is the make, model and possibly engine size for them to tell you. The head gasket does come as one piece and replacing it can be labor intensive depending on the build of the motor. If you want to see a general picture of a head gasket go to

As far as costs go, well that depends on your location. Dealerships usually have ';blue book'; prices for different jobs and mechanics work on hourly commissions. If the book says the job takes 3 hours and the mechanic finishes in 15 minutes you will still be charged for 3 hours of work. A dealership mechanic in my area earns roughly $45-50 an hour. ';Shade tree'; operators usually are cheaper but not by much. You could call the local Nissan service department and ask the labor cost to replace the gasket. If this is where you checked to begin with, why not try another dealership.

Good luck.Is a head gasket usually greasy or could this be a sign of an oil leak %26amp; must I replace the entire gasket?
There's only one way to tell if you have a head gasket leak. Pull the oil dipstick and the oil cap and look for a creamy/yellow goo. If there's no goo then the mechanic is dodgy, don't ever go to him again. If there is goo then the head gasket is a big job because they have to ';Skim'; the head on a machine to get it level again. It might be cheaper to pick another engine up. I did :)
You will have to replace the whole gasket like he said.

Did you happen to notice white smoke coming out if your exhaust. water in your oil and etc. These are two ways you can tell of you do have a blowen head gasket.

Cost a easy 550 or alot more.
There are NO partial gaskets--and no easy fix to leak problems--loosen up the wallet and fix the car right
First sign of a leaking head gasket is white smoke out the exhaust. When a head gasket breaks, water goes into the oil causing the smoke. The price he quoted is way too high. Labor would be high because it takes a while to get the head off. Then, most places will have the head machined to make sure it seals correctly. call an auto store for the part price. Probably under $50.
You would be surprised how much the gasket can cost. You not only have to replace the head gasket but also the valve cover gasket and probably the intake and exhaust gaskets. As well as other seals and small gaskets. However, I don't think it's very common for an oil leak to be caused by a head gasket. Keep in mind your car is 11 years old so there are a lot of possible places for oil to be leaking. I would suggest going to another garage and getting a second opinion.
no such thing as a 200 dollar head gasket, unless the head needs machine work. also usually these wont leak oil, but it is possible. i would get a second opinion.

My car leaks oil. My options are to fix each leak or replace the engine. What should I do?

My car leaks from four or five different places. Three gaskets and a camshaft need to be replaced and I think there may be another leak! The oil drips very slowly though. Its a Chrysler Cirrus, '97 with 150,000 on it and it runs great. The body is still in great shape too, only a couple of rust spots. I wanted to give this car to my mom. Is it worth the trouble fixing it?My car leaks oil. My options are to fix each leak or replace the engine. What should I do?
As long as it's not the rear main engine seal. (very labor intensive to get to), the other gaskets should be relatively inexpensive to replace.

Even if you can cut the number of leaks in half, as long as you make sure there is enough oil in the engine, it should be fine to drive. My car leaks oil. My options are to fix each leak or replace the engine. What should I do?
well it will be cheaper to repair the engine than to replace it but i do recommend a good shop at least if they screw up they have to fix it if they aren't certified than they can just look at you and laugh good luck
just fix the leaks.all it would take is gasgets and or seals.that could be done up under 150.00
I agree. The engine will cost thousands. Fix the leaks!
where are u at i'll fix it

I have an oil leak on my car?

I have an oil leak on my car at the front end. It looks as though it may be coming from the engine. Its not pouring or trickling, just dripping. Anyone have any ideas, or know where I can find out what it is online? Thanks.I have an oil leak on my car?
You need to find out were the oil is coming from, clean up the engine with a mix of washing powder and washing up liquid. Apply it all over the engine with a brush, let it stand for 20 mins or so. Then wash it off. Start the engine up, let it idle for a bit and look to see were the oil is coming from.

Ja.I have an oil leak on my car?
If it's just a drip from time to time, most likely to be sump plug washer, alternatively it could be anything else really!

Sump gasket, oil filter, main oil seal either puller or opposite end, rocker cover gasket, any external oil cooler pipework, as long as it's a very slow drip you'll be ok - Do note though that it will tend to leak when HOT, as the engine oil is much more fluid... first thing in the morning when cold, the oil is unlikely to leak.

As above, give the engine block a good clean, then take it for a drive to really warm it up, then later on check where there are obvious marks of oil leakage.
could be comming from anywhere..power wash the engine then you will see where its comming fron esier..
knackered gasket seal?
WIPE IT CLEAN AND CHECK OUT A CHILDRESS AUTO MANAUL ON YOUR VEH

Where is my OIL leak coming from?

Oil leak coming from inside the exhaust manifold and running down through the exhaust. The oil leak is INSIDE the exhaust manifold not on the outside. There is oil stain by the header bolts and I can see oil dripping when I look at where the headers and the exhaust bolt up.Where is my OIL leak coming from?
It sounds like the valve cover gasket is blown. It is leaking from there and running down the motor.Where is my OIL leak coming from?
Leaking valve covers, probably. Also, if your oil pressure regulator is stuck, the oil pressure is TOO high and it will promote leaks from many points on an engine, even the seals. I am guessing that this engine has high mileage. De-sludge the engine with Amzoil crankcase cleanier first. Then begin using a good synthetic oil, one that does NOT create sludge. THis will keep the oil pressure at it's best and continue to clean out the inside of the engine as you drive.
first i dont know what kind of engine you have. im assuming it is an overhead cam. my guess is youve either got a bad valve guide and seal(unlucky),or b somehow one of your bolts or studs have tapped oil galley(lucky, fix with thread sealant)or c youve got a broken head my friend. make double sure the oil isnt coming from above or being sprayed there. if you can see it dripping its substantial.
Unless you have a turbo the oil leak is not coming from the exhaust headers; most likely from the valve covers.
Is there water mixed in with the oil? That can indicate a blown head.
inside the pipe bad ring bad valve guide close to being blown up motor

Can a turbo on a 6.9 chevy diesel leak oil into the air intake?

Would this make the rig smoke? Is there a seal or something in the turbo? Can a turbo on a 6.9 chevy diesel leak oil into the air intake?
check the turbo

it has a oil passage in it to lube the bearing

if the seal goes bad it can leak oil in the intake

or even worse start to run on the oil and the engine rev out of control (';engine over speed'; or 'run away'; are common terms to describe this condition)

also check the crank case breather , i believe the return goes onto the intake as well

this will be a tube form one of the valve covers to the intake if your model has it

  • Why would my car only leak oil after a 30 mile drive?

It has never leaked oil before this, and it still doesnt leak any now. But, after a 30 mile drive doing 65-70 the whole way...there was an oil spot on the driveway. What would cause this? Why would my car only leak oil after a 30 mile drive?
Please check the oil filter and oil drian plug. If they are loose it will leak some oil. I do my oil change and some time this happens and i just tighten these two items and leak stops.

Also if your vehicle is older than try using high mileage oil like ';valvoline Max life'; or ';Castrol / Penzoil High mileage';. As these oil has special additive and sealent, which on long term will stop leak. Just watch your garage floor meanwhile and add sufficient oil to compensate the loss.

Hope this work and all the best :-)Why would my car only leak oil after a 30 mile drive?
The only way you will know for sure where the car is leaking oil is to raise the car and look under it.(use safety stands) The reason your car is leaking oil after a 30 mile drive is your oil becomes hot and thin after the engine warms up, this lets the oil leak out of broken or bad seals. Here is where I would look, first check Valve cover, is oil leaking down the side of your engine? then oil pan seal and plug, is oil leaking from either of these? On my Toyota Camry a rubber oil line cracked and was leaking oil down the back of my engine. If you will look I am sure you can find the leak.--http://u39.biz/

When taking the front wheel and forks of the motorcycle , will the suspension some apart , and will oil leak?

I have never done this before but I have a rough idea of what to do to get my new gaiters on my Honda XR 125 . However its a little daunting and I don't want the suspension joints to come apart , resulting in in oil leaking out ETC .When taking the front wheel and forks of the motorcycle , will the suspension some apart , and will oil leak?
Not a chance, but its a hell of a job to take on if you don't have the proper tools.

Get yourself a Haynes manual for your model bike. When taking the front wheel and forks of the motorcycle , will the suspension some apart , and will oil leak?
HUH? your forks are sealed. the forks will not leak if you take them off the bike.
    gaitors?

I am guessing you are referring to the expanding rubber like fork boots that protect the exposed fork tube that slides into the lower portion???

pretty simple actually ... I don't guess the boot will slide up from the bottom by merely removing the front wheel assembly???

otherwise, merely loosen the pinch bolts in the triple clamps (upper %26amp; lower) that clamp the upper fork tubes in place. once these bolts are loosened enough, the fork tube should turn in the triple clamp... merely slide the fork tube down and out of the triple clamps, slide the fork boot over the top portion of the fork leg and slide the upper fork leg back up into the triple clamps and tighten the pinch bolts back in place. repeat on the other side fork leg ... insuring both fork legs are at the same height in the triple clamps upon completion...

then slide the fork boot down over the lower fork housing and install either a clamp or zip-tie, repeat on the upper portion... about 15-20 minutes per fork leg tops...

replaced bunches of these over the years on KDXs %26amp; XRs... but shooting from memory, most could be done from the bottom by removing the front wheel assembly and stretching the boots over the base of the lower fork housings... (much easier %26amp; quicker).

oh yeah, as long as you do NOT remove the top cap off the forks, you should not have any oil leakage (unless the seals are already damaged where the fork tube slides into the lower fork housing).
All good answers nothing to add.
    suspension joints?...lol...love the terms...

no,the forks will only leak oil if you separate them...your only replacing the gators.easy as pie...but it need 2 people...

1,raise the bike with a CENTRE bike stand, you need the front wheel about a foot off the ground, take off the caliper and hose mounts.

loosen spedo cable if it has one.

loosen all the alen bolts on the top and bottom yolks..

now tap the wheel down and both fork tubes will drop out of the yolks..

    remove and replace gators.

    refit the forks and retighten.....

    ive done 1000's.
Nah you got nothing to worry about.
take the wheel off first, to reduce the weight

then the forks, by loosening the bolts on the yokes

oil won't leak unless you split the top and the bottom of the forks, which you don't need to do
You wont have any oil leaks or any problems so long as you just drop the forks from their yokes. Simply take out the pinch bolts that hold in the forks and you should be able to drop the forks out. Replace the gators and slide the forks back in to place. Remember to use a torque wrench when tightening up your forks. The bike manual will tell you what the settings are.
Its really not much of a job and pretty easy once you get into it. Removing the forks won't cause them to leak.

Be sure your re-install the forks with the same amount of tube clearing the top triple clamp
NO, I am sure for I did this before.

What are possible causes for automobile oil leak?

what are possible causes? What are possible causes for automobile oil leak?
if you have your oil changed (walmart) tighten the drain plug

sure is engine oil if is red could be power steering or trans

also gaskets ...........pcv.........trans lines............What are possible causes for automobile oil leak?
One possible cause is stripped threads on the oil pan's drain plug or its socket. Apparently, some workers in ';10-minute'; oil change shops are quite careless when they put the plugs back into the oil pan after the oil has drained out. Rather than make sure the plug is screwing in easily, they force the plug in against the threads, causing damage and resulting in a leak there. This happened to me, and cost me over a hundred dollars for a new oil pan. My car dealer's shop foreman told me that it happens fairly often.
Usually; Gaskets and oil seals, they become old and hard and brittle,

the root cause of most failures in an automobile is due to vibration.

for minstance take Freon in your A/C most cars even with a good system will have to have freon added in about 3 to 4 seasons, due to the vibration of driving.

On a house you may only need to add freon once in ten to twenty years. No Vibration.

    think, think, think.
umm idk. one time there was this guy in front of us and his oil was leaking. and we tried warning him by honking the car but the liught turned green and he made a left and we went straight and 5 min u know we hear an ambulance. idk if it was that guy...
Valve cover, oil pan, oil filter, pcv, leaking o-ring on dipstick tube, just to name a few.
Seals and gaskets, cracked housings, loose bolts.
    usually dried out seals/gaskets

but approximately would it cost to get it fixed? Thank you!Approximately how much would it cost to get this oil leak fixed? ?
Not enough information to make a determination. Location, type of oil, conditions when leaking, rate of leaking, ect all could effect the price of a repair.Approximately how much would it cost to get this oil leak fixed? ?

1996 honda accord sedan internal oil leak?

On my honda accord there is an internal oil leak and oil is getting into the area where my spark plugs are. They spark plugs are ok, but i need to figure out how to fix this. Does anyone know? can i do it my self, or do i need to be overcharged by some mechanic?1996 honda accord sedan internal oil leak?
I'd say you need to be overcharged by some mechanic, good luck.1996 honda accord sedan internal oil leak?
Are you overfilling the engine with oil? are you sure it's not gasoline you are seeing? could be anything from an Oring to a Gasket to a blown head.

    Good luck.

I would have to visually see it to give more information, sorry, but my suggestion isto take it to a mechanic if the problem persists after an oil, and oil filter change.

    hope this helps

How do I clean the oil in 1st spark plug cylinder due to oil gasket leak?

I have a 93 Nissan Altima and the valve gasket needs replacing. I can replace the gasket but how do I clean the oil that leaked into the spark plug cylinder?

ThanksHow do I clean the oil in 1st spark plug cylinder due to oil gasket leak?
    Valve cover gasket?

    Or valve seal?

Either way, with the spark plug still out of the number one cylinder, rotate the piston to TDC or Top Dead Center, this is the highest point of travel the piston reaches in the cylinder.

If you want you can roll up a good quality paper towel and dab up some of the oil. You should not need to much more than that. Actually the electronic ignition burns hot enough to clear the cylinder.

The only reason I suggest rotating the engine over to TDC is just in case a lot of oil or fluid got into the cylinder, turning it over with the spark plug missing will prevent you from hydraulic-ing the cylinder, which theoretically could happen if enough fluids somehow entered the cylinder. At low rotation speeds, this could break a compression ring, and possibly bend a rod. In most cases the starter would just not be able to crank the engine around. I.E%26gt; Hydraulic the engine.

But once you crank the cylinder over with the spark plug still out. Clean the plug, check to make sure the gap is still correct, unless you are running gap-less. Put the wires back on and fire it up. You may get a small puff of smoke at the start, it will burn off quickly. How do I clean the oil in 1st spark plug cylinder due to oil gasket leak?
It takes awhile, you can use tough paper towels to soak up the oil in the cylinders, and most of the rest will burn off as you drive the car. Just be sure not to leave any paper in there to catch fire later. The spark plugs are easy to break off so be careful scooping out any crud left over, and remember, you don't want to remove any spark plugs until the cylinders are cleaned out to prevent contamination in the engine.
Use gasoline its great at cleaning off oil.

  • What kind of costs am I looking at for a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix engine oil leak?

it all depends on where the leak is, if its a rear main, it's expensive(1200-750), but it could be a drain plug washer, and that is less than 10 bucks. There are a number of things that can cause an oil leak, but you could always just add oil and keep driving, its not abnormal for an older car to have oil leaking from it. What kind of costs am I looking at for a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix engine oil leak?
First thing to do is,tighten all the oil pan nuts and rocker cover bolts, but dont overtighten. Then jetwash the motor, avoiding the electrics, then blo9w out the spark plug recesses with an air line and run the motor watching for any leaks. You dont say if it is smoking from the exhaust,it could be burning the oil.It can be the gearbox seal,it may be that the drain plug was fitted wrongly and cross threaded,in which case you will need a helicoil fitting. As for prices, pick your repairer and ask. What kind of costs am I looking at for a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix engine oil leak?
Where is it leaking from? If you have to replace the oil pan gasket and do it yourself, then the fix could cost less than 25 dollars. If it is just a stripped drain plug then the cost to fix it could cost less then 5 dollars. If a valve cover gasket is leaking then the cost could be less than 30 dollars. If its a bad oil filter gasket then the cost could be less than 5 dollars. You gotta let us know where the leak is coming from.
It really depends on where the leak is. If you haven already tried it, go to an auto parts store and get some engine oils stop leak. ask the clerck they can reccommend the best stuff. If it is an oil pan leak, not too much if you do it yourself, just the cost of a new seal, oil and oil filter. But if you need a better idea where is the leak?
It's a Pontiac, unload it while you can.
    2.5 Million ??
Anywhere from 25-200 dollars! It depends what needs replaced.
not that much. just go get it appraised at an auto shop. it might just be a loose oil filter
depends on how bad it is 100-350

How can I stop or slow an oil leak on my own with a product, it is a '98 Infiniti q 30 Thank you now?

You don't. Anything that will stop leaks will also reduce oil flow in tight clearances. How can I stop or slow an oil leak on my own with a product, it is a '98 Infiniti q 30 Thank you now?
There's no easy way without having tools and a lift or ramps. Park it over card board or something and keep the oil topped off for now.How can I stop or slow an oil leak on my own with a product, it is a '98 Infiniti q 30 Thank you now?
I wouldn't add any of those stop leak products as they just swell your seals for a temporary fix but in the meantime they also swell up the seals that were fine so they will fail much sooner and cost you hundreds if not thousands later on than if you hadn't added that $5-10 product in the 1st place. Anything is only a temporary fix and you should get it checked out...have you had the oil changed recently? Oddly enough most techs don't properly tighten the plug on 1 out of every 10 vehicles they see in any given day.

If you haven't had one in awhile you could also go to a heavier weight oil and that will slow the leak a little (i.e from 10w-30 to a 15-50 or 20-50 oil as long as you aren't in a cold climate since the heavier weight won't be able to lubricate properly on initial startup in cold weather.

Would also help further if you knew where the leak was coming from since there are many places to choose from.
';Lucas Hydraulic Oil Booster %26amp; Stop Leak';,will stop many leaks, the company I work for tested this product for them,it stopped many leaks that i never thought it would
If the leak isn't that bad, I would leave it alone until you have money to fix it. Just think of it as a Harley, it's marking it's spot. Oil leak stop products can ruin your engine,

Oil leak, could you please give some suggestions for repair?

My car is a 99 Chevrolet Prism, not much but paid for and it only has 109,000 original miles on it, so i would really like to fix if possible. The oil is leaking somewhere, because i use about 1 quart of oil every 100 miles. There is this black smut around the tail pipe on the back of my car also. I have taken it to 2 people for repairs. It cost me 116.00 for the 1st trip then another 148.00 for the next trip and it is still not fixed. I paid to have the PCV valve and Intake Gasket replaced and that is still not helping. They are saying there are no signs of a oil leak underneath the car anywhere!Oil leak, could you please give some suggestions for repair?
Take to a mechanic that isn't stupid. It's leaking and they should be able to tell why.Oil leak, could you please give some suggestions for repair?
You must not have completely read my question. I have taken it to a mechanic!!!!!!!!1 Report Abuse

    Thank you Report Abuse

You cannot drive this car nor afford it adding a quart of oil every 100 miles. I would take it to the dealer or AAA recommended mechanic to check the engine gasket or other cause of the leak. They do this every day. It can't be the oil pan gasket because the tail pipe has carbon residue, which may indicate a very serious and expensive engine problem. You should have noticed lots of grey smoke coming out of the exhaust, especially when you start the car.

I agree with gailforcewind, though, that this repair could cost more than a newer used car. It would be better to look now before the engine is totally destroyed. Look for used Civics or Corollas that will last over 250k with regular maintenance.
Your leak is not on the outside of the engine but on the inside. Like was mentioned its burning oil. Don't pay anymore unless the mechanic is smart enough to understand that. It will probably be quite expensive.
If it isn't visibly leaking oil, then it must be burning oil. Take it to a competent mechanic this time.
    Your burning oil...

    Probably the valve seals..

That would also explain the black around your exhaust pipe....
Are you sure you mean 1 quart every 100 miles? Maybe you meant 1 quart every 1000 miles? If it truly is using 1 quart every 100 miles and not leaking it externally, then it must be burning the oil in the engine which means you have a very serious engine problem. A technician who really knows about your engine (like your dealer technician) needs to do some simple tests on the engine and determine whether it can be fixed or whether it's best to replace it with a remanufactured engine.
The car is burning oil. It's serious and you really do need to look for a replacement.

A 99 is equipped with a Toyota engine that is very durable. The oil situation could be bad valve guides, bad valves, both or worse. I'm sure the car smokes, though you may not notice it while driving. An internal engine problem such as this really outweighs the value of the car. Get rid of it and find something else.

You're on borrowed time, best of luck.
sorry to be the barer of bad news, it sounds like burnt engine

rings, this would be a engine tear down lots of labor hrs,

there is a additive you can get in any auto store, walmart,k-mart, big lots. etc that you can add its made by stp, and numerous others, it states it stops smoking and oil lose,

its thick as honey, put it in were you add oil,

it does slow down the lose of oil, and smoking, were these rings are burnt they now have gaps around them and this thick

    gunk will help seal.

this no fix but may get a few extra miles before it dies.

you can spend the money for a new engine, not rebuilt ,

for about 3000.00 but trading it in and buying a new or newer

car is whats going to happen soon..

    good luck
It is not leaking, it is burning the oil. That is why it is black around the tail pipe.

You can go to Auto Zone or Pep Boys or the like and get Marvin's Mystery Oil or another additive that bumps up the thickness of the oil and should slow the burning down.

Short of boaring the cylinders and putting in new piston rings (very expensive) you will have this problem. Just check your oil every time you get fuel and add.
oil goes 2 ways...it leaks or burns.....109,000 is not so old...is it tuned...bad running causes soot but thats not oil....the repairs u got dont really affect oil use...fiind another mechanic..to do a compression test....put cardboard under car to look 4 leaks...try thicker oil...20w 40 or 20w 50
OK here is what I would do , Take it to the car wash some have engine cleaner some don't however clean the motor top and bottom , Be careful not to wet the top to much sides and both ends, Now when you get home you need a piece of cardboard to put your car over let over night and start looking , Reason I said bottom It could be the oil pan gasket, hope this helps

Anywhere oil might possibly leak out of a 1997 Toyota Tercel. Like say, the oil pan drain plug, the oil pan gasket, the valve cover gasket, the head gasket, the oil filter gasket, the oil filter mount, if a main seal is leaking, even from bell housing where the engine and transmission cases join, the oil pump, or anywhere an external hose may carry oil from one part of the engine block to another, if there is one. if its squeaking have you checked the belt .... could be a hose that simple garages are in the business to see that its only a hose and then tell you you need 1000.00 dollars for like a new rack and pinion assembly

bring it to a small no name mom and pop shop the big chain garages are the ones who pull fast ones ... family owned shops are mostly honest try !!!I thought it was an oil leak, but a mechanic said it was steering fluid-the leak up there in the right front?
I use prestone steering fluid with stop leak and it slowed my pump leak by 90%. I use it all the time now. leak or no leak. I had a rack and pinion leak on my '96 cougar and I took it out, got a repair kit (a couple of seals), and fixed it for about 12 bucks as I remember. Find a small shop, as suggested above, that is able to do it. Took me about 6 hours and I had never done that job before. The seal kit came with instructions, as I remember, on how to install the seals.
i wouldn't use the power steering stop leak in it also, most of the time that stuff doesn't work too well,if you cant afford to have it repaired right now just keep an eye on the fluid level in the pump,it may get bad enough that you cant drive it,and if so you will loose your power steering all together, and it will become more bad to drive it like this, the noise is in the pump its having to work harder and may also be a little low on fluid, good luck with it.
If it's red or dirty red it's steering fluid. You could try some Lucas P.S. fluid, It's guaranteed to stop leaks.
it will slow the leak down but wont stop the squeek thats if its a seal or an o ring leak but if its a hose leak it probably wont help because it wont swell
yes ive heard good thing about those stop leaks for steering systems and no i dont think a leaking rack and pinion is going to cause you to die even if you did loose all your fluid

now if you did loose all your fluid you not going to have power steering assist but its not going to kill you
Fine, you can't afford it. So one day you will be driving along and come to a curve and when you go to turn the wheel it turns so hard you cannot turn it in time and smash head-on into a tree and die.

You can't afford to fix it but you can afford to die. That makes a lot of sense. If you cannot afford to fix it then you should not be driving.

  • Can anyone recommend an oil stop leak product?

I have an oil leak on my geo tracker. From experience, can someone recommend a good stop leak product? Any help would be appreciated. Can anyone recommend an oil stop leak product?
try changing gaskets instead of pouring crap, i mean a stop leak, into your engine. It will only help for a little bit and if the hole is to big the top leak wont do anything anyway.

Just change your gaskets it will save you in the long run.Can anyone recommend an oil stop leak product?
I have had good success with Form-A-Gasket and Permatex RTV Silicone.

Both of these, however, are things that you will need to apply in between the surface where the oil is leaking. Haven't had anything that I poured into the oil actually work, and many of the oil additives can't tell the difference between a leak and a small hole that the oil is supposed to flow through.
    Not sure but try something made by ';Bars Leak';

They make wicked good stop leak for radiator

    I never had oil leak.
Stop leak products? a new gasket......

Most stop leak products just simply thicken the oil (thicker oil leaks less then thinner) and do nothing.......

Others will thin the oil, contain lots of seal swellers and usually isn't worth the money you paid for it....

May stop the leak or lessen it for A WHILE.
YES, FELPRO MAKES AN EXELLENT OIL PAN GASKET. ANYTHING ELSE IS PISSING IN THE WIND...ALL IT TAKES IS ONE TIME LOW ON OIL AND YOU'LL BE BUYING AN ENGINE...BUT YOU GO AHEAD AND HOPE FOR A MIRICLE CURE THAT YOU JUST POUR IN YOUR ENGINE...GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!!!
First of all depends where the leak is coming from ?. Could be just the oil filter is clogged, if that is not it might be the gaskets, oil pump, etc if you can,t detect where the leak is coming from you will have to steam cleaned the engine and take it from there. Hope this helps.
you need a new oil pan/plug..nothing will stop the leak.

Do any of the engine oil additives work for cars that burn or leak oil?

I need to put a new quart in about every 2 months. I don't see any smoke at startup ordriving, and there's no oil stains in the driveway.Do any of the engine oil additives work for cars that burn or leak oil?
The ONLY additive I would use is SFR. They are the ones that invented most of the technologies for additives and are not just some marketing company like lucas oil or slick 50.

I used to think all additives were snake oil until I tried ProTecta Synthetic Engine Treatment from SFR.

They also have an interesting article on why additives work on their blog.Do any of the engine oil additives work for cars that burn or leak oil?
My family swears by Lucas oil treatment, actually any lucas additive. I loose a quart every 500 miles, unless I use it. huge improvement.
Every 2 months is not bad, should be about due for a change near then. How many miles on the car? how many miles everytime you add oil? make and model, and year of car would also help.
Yeahs there are several that will do the trick. I am a retired mechanic and would highly reccomend ';LUCAS OIL TREATMENT'; That be some good stuff then second would be STP
It could have mixed with your radiator water.

How much will it cost me to get an oil pan leak fixed on a 97 geo prizm?

I recently took the car in for an oil change and they said it had a leak in the oil pan. About how much will it cost me to have them fix it?How much will it cost me to get an oil pan leak fixed on a 97 geo prizm?
You should know if you have a leak or not, if you car leaves oil spots all over the place, then it has a leak.

I would anticipate a 10 year old car to leak a little, if you only add one quart between oil changes, then it probably isn't enough to worry about unless you can't stand the mess on the driveway.

The important part is to check the oil regularly so you know how much it is using and leaking.

If you are really interested in how much the cost is to repair, you can look up online or phone local autopart stores for the cost of the gasket, then go down to the library and look up the labor time in a reference book for Mechanics. (Sorry I can't think of the name of that reference book right now but either a mechanic or a reference librarian will be able to tell you what it is). Anyway, if the labor book says 2.5 hours, then multiply by your favorite shops labor cost (probably about $60-$75 an hour) and you have done basically what a shop does to give you a quote. If that is too much work to look it up all yourself, call 2-3 shops in your local area and ask for a quote. How much will it cost me to get an oil pan leak fixed on a 97 geo prizm?
sounds like a oil pan gasket leak, fix it yourself would just include draining the oil, take the bolts out of the oil pan attaching to the bottom of the engine and putting new oil pan gasket around the top of the oil pan.always get some silicone to put on the already preformed oil pan gasket for extra security.could also be the drain plug or (bolt )for the oil pan.if so,buy new one. very cheap or mechanic will charge for time and labor
Well since the engine and trans have to be loosened and lifted about 6'; to clear everything.

And that takes about 3 hours out

    3 hours in

Plus parts and time for the repair

At 50.00 per hour about :

    300.00+
Sometimes they seep a little. If there are no oil spots underneath and the car does not use oil, no big worry. $150.
Asking that kind of question in this forum is sencless... call around to shops in your area and ask.

It depends on the location of the oil leak. And if the parts are in stock at your local parts store. How long does it normally take for a mechanic to fix an oil leak on a car?
    depends on source of leak,

a bad washer on oil plug could take minutes,

a bad oil pan gasket, could take an hour(s) to access pan, clean, replace gasket, and attach back to engine,

a bad valve cover gasket, may take about the same to remove, replace and assemble,

if leak was from engine gasket due to compression leak, that would take a days schedule to dis assemble the whole engine and repair,

..How long does it normally take for a mechanic to fix an oil leak on a car?
    Depends on the oil leak.

I have fixed some for less than a hundred bucks.

Had one we had almost $4000 in fixing.

So time wise, less than an hour to over 50 hours.

Could changing a new clutch cause an oil leak via drive shaft oil seal?

I have an oil leak since my new clutch was installed yesterday (a previous newly installed clutch was done incorrectly and so a new one had to be oput in).

Only thing is a had a drive shaft oil seal replaced at another garage 2 weeks ago too 9they said that the last clutch installation caused the leak). Which is likely to be the problem:

a: the repair from 2 weeks ago has caused the leak

b: yesterday's clutch installation caused the leakCould changing a new clutch cause an oil leak via drive shaft oil seal?
Always enter the year make and model of the car. Front wheel drive cars have a different clutch and transmission seal arrangement than rear wheel drive cars. Some people call front axles drive-shafts.

A transmission tail-shaft seal on a rear wheel driven car is inexpensive and easy to replace. Occasionally a leaking rear seal has a bad tail-shaft bushing or bearing causing the seal to leak. All seals are not created equal either.

In either case you can't positively say that the seal was or was not leaking before or after the first clutch replacement.Could changing a new clutch cause an oil leak via drive shaft oil seal?
    Your confusing me!!

How can the clutch job yesterday cause a leak 2 weeks ago???

I hope you're not paying for a faulty job to be done twice?

Are you getting the work done by someone you trust with a good reputation, or just as cheaply as possible?

    Possible causes.

Anytime the shaft has come out %26amp; gone back in could have caused the leak by nicking the sealing surface.

The shaft could be worn so the new seal isn't sealing properly.

The seal was just worn out, they go hard over time and don't seal properly.
changing the clutch would,nt cause a oil leak. probably the rear main seal was leaking in the first place and that,s what ruined the clutch. check the rear main seal. if it,s leaking then you will be changing the clutch before too long again.

  • What could cause a Camry 92 to leak oil?

Where would it come out from because it's not leaking through the drain plug, loose bolt, nuts or old seal etc? If something else is the cause, what can it possibly be and would it be an expensive and difficult job? What parts are most commonly bought for a leaking problem like this plus price and labor individually? Thank you very much. What could cause a Camry 92 to leak oil?
Easiest and cheapest way to find an oil leak: Most auto parts stores sell a dye to put into the system that mixes with the oil and will show up under ultraviolet light.

A treatment usually costs about $4.00 and any ';self respecting'; shop will usually check it out for next to nothing.

The fix is what will cost you. Anywhere oil goes, it can leak. Is it a pressure leak, a gravity leak, a flow leak, etc.

Some repairs, such as a gasket are fairly inexpensive to repair. Even a pressure leak from a filter or a guage sensor are not too bad, but if it is a rear main seal, then the transmission needs to be pulled out, which could be quite costly.

Without proper diagnosis, there is no way to tell where or how much it will cost. What could cause a Camry 92 to leak oil?
Do you seem to have a puddle under the car when it's parked? Or are you having to add oil more often than usual?

If I was getting a puddle under my car, I would go to a self serve car wash and, while the motor was running, spray the oil off the lower part of the engine. Then drive it for a short while and then look the engine over to see where it was wet. This would give me a good hint what was leaking. Once I know that I would take it to a trusted mechanic and have him fix it.
Oil can leak out from pretty much anywhere. Lots of times it can be the valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, or front/rear main seals.

valve cover or oil pan gaskets are easy to replace. Front main and especially rear mains cost more.

Anyone know the best way tom remove old oil leak spots from a car on a concrete street??

Leave cat-liter or saw dust on it over night. Then sweep it up and put bleach on the spot.Anyone know the best way tom remove old oil leak spots from a car on a concrete street??
You'll be amazed how well Cat litter will do this. You can buy 25 pounds for about a dollar, and it'll pull the oil right out of the concrete. It can't be raining, though. Rain just turns it into mud.
The ';Awesome'; from the .99cents store, a wire brush, some knee pads and a lil muscle... ohh yeah and a little water too.
buy some powdered cement not the redimix stuff, make sure it will not rain anytime soon then put the dry cement mix on the oil and grind it in with a broom or the bottom of you shoe. Do this about 3-4 times and the oil spot along with a little help from the sun should go away.
since engine oil is originally from crude oil, the best is to use normal patrol first on the spot and brush it hard a bit, than apply a base material you use like your washing mechine detergents and apply brush as well, it most probably will remove the spots.
Bleach or vinegar. You'll have to saturate the spot a few times, but it'll work.
Muratic acid works good.Bleach is best .It won't burn your eyes, throat %26amp; nose as bad.
Kitty litter, grind it in with your foot let it absorb for a couple of days.
    Brake cleaner works great!
I haven't tried this, but I have heard that coke is so strong that not only can it eat a hole in your stomach, but you can pour a new can of this on oil stains and leave it over night, and it should eat it up. I would think it may need to be repeated a night or two more for worse stains. Let us know how it goes.

look under the car and see if it is leaking? check is the oil stick and see how low it is
If you just can't ID it from looking around under the area of the leak (yes, sometimes the oil runs sideways, making that tough), there are fluorescent dyes that can be added to the oil. If you get on it right away with a black light, the source of the leak will be immediately evident.
There is a dye you can get to put in the oil. Go to a parts store like Advance or Auto Zone
Thoroughly pressure wash the engine(protect electronic components by bagging and taping). Let dry. Start the car and let idle for a few minutes. Inspect closely for signs of leakage. If none found drive a short distance and check again.
    Take to dealer.

this should not be a problem as long as you remove all of the old mineral oilIf I fix my car's oil leak, can I then put synthetic oil in the car?
what most people don't know is that the synthetic molecule is physically smaller than the natural oil molecule. seals these days are used for natural oil and unless is specifies that the seal is for synthetic oil, then it will seep on you, then lead to a leak. i'm not saying don't use synthetic, you can if you wish. just be prepared for the higher technology oil finding it's way past the seal
Of course - if you insist.

Personally, I wouldn't spend the extra money on the synthetic at this stage of the engine - I'd just go with a high quality oil and regular maintenance - after all, it's done pretty well up to the 150,000 mile mark, hasn't it?
    yes you can

make sue you have everything new

    and you will be fine

Remember one drop of oil on cement goes to the size of a half dollar, so 1 or 2 drops may seem bad, but its not.

Most people think that when they have to add oil to the engine, its because of the oil leak, but most of the time its not.

Oil leak won't affect an engine, as long as there is oil in it.How bad can an oil leak affect my car? can it be fixed anyhow?
Most likely the pan gasket .. if not, have the Toyota tech check the rear main seal and or camshaft seal.. is there oil visible on top of the motor? Valve cover gasket in that case.
Almost anything that is broken ca nbe fixed. Sometimes the cost of fixing it may exceed the value of the car. If this happens, it is in your best interest to find someone who repairs there own car, sell it to them, and buy yourself a different car.

An oil leak can harm many things, not just the engine itself. It can cause damage to cv boots by getting road grime stuck to the oil wich in turn maybe something that may cut your CV boots up.

Don't wait very long to have a professional look at it. Get a few opinions, and don't pay for someone to diagnose your problem.

    Best of wishes

    Blessings
Well if there is not enough oil in the engine it will wear prematurely and cause your car to seize up. It would be very bad
Get it fixed. Otherwise you must constantly add oil so you don't destroy your engine....the cost of motor oil can add up in the long run so might as well spend the money now for repair.
Depends on how much oil you are losing. There are lots of places where your car can lose oil : head gaskets, main seal, rear seal, oil-line or oil pump or even a hole in the oil pan. If you put kitty litter under your car where you usually park you can see where its coming from. Oil leaks are always something that must be repaired. If you lose all the oil the motor will seize and that is a major cost to replace.

I suggest taking your car to a mechanic you trust and have him or her check it out. No oil leak cannot be repaired and in my experience it is better to spend a little now instead of a lot later.
ANY oil leak can be fixed. Some cheaply, some not.

If it's a SMALL leak, like only a small puddle each day, just keep a bottle of oil in your car and top it off every day, until it gets much worse. That will give you time to save up some money for the repair.

Remember, the marks on the stick represent 1 quart, so if the indicated level is between the marks, it needs 1/2 quart.
Fix the leak immediately before you have so little oil that you damage the engine.
If the leak is a few drips per day - no big deal. If you are losing a quart per week - then keep checking oil level daily.
WHERE the oil leak is would determine how bad it could get. There are some simple things that could cause it. One that's irritating is when the drain plug is leaking. Some vehicles have a washer of sorts made of tough rubber that, when it breaks down, will leak. Sometimes, its from the drain plug, which is actually a bolt, getting cross-threaded, in which case it requires replacement.

Another easy-to-fix problem is gaskets. There's a gasket on the oil pan that is, in most cases, pretty easy to replace. The valve covers could be the problem, but in Toyota Corollas, depending on the year, wouldn't have that problem.

If the head is where it's losing oil (under the throttle body-- fuel injection) then you have your work cut out for you and it needs done by a professional. Also, if the head gasket is blown or the head itself is cracked, that's bad juju. Oil could be seeping into the water or the gas (it will smoke if it's doing this).

As long as you check your oil often, keep the oil level up between oil changes and don't let it get low, you could go awhile with the leak without doing any damage. Check your oil and find out how fast a leak it has and then you'll know how often you will need to add some.

Another interesting thing about leaks. I had a vehicle that leaked around the drain plug every so often. I found out that it was when the oil had started breaking down that it was thin enough to leak. If I didn't go past the time to change the oil, it wouldn't leak, so when it started leaking, I knew it was time to change it and POOF! leak was gone. That actually was beneficial, as I didn't have to keep tabs on my mileage to change the oil!

Toyota Corollas tend to be good cars. They run for quite some time, as far as mileage. While their parts can get a little more expensive, in the long run, since you won't have to replace them as often, you'll come out ahead. Good luck. Keep tabs on that oil.

sorry but the most reasonable way to fix the leak is to find out where it is leaking from and then check options for repair. kinda vague questionI have a slight oil leak on a Chevy 350 engine. What would be the most reasonable way to fix the problem?
Head Gaskets won't give you a oil leak. You will lose oil but it will be combusted, not leak.

You should thoroughly degrease your motor and gearbox so that it is as clean as you can possibly get it, then start it up and look to see where the leak is coming from.

It could be something simple like a fuel pump gasket, or possibly the oil filter is leaking, or something harder to fix like a pan gasket. It could also be a leak from your gearbox, What colour is the oil?

Gaskets aren't dear to buy, but replacing them could be time consuming and expensive. A pan gasket could take around 4 hours to replace.I have a slight oil leak on a Chevy 350 engine. What would be the most reasonable way to fix the problem?
depends you didnt say from where so im guessing its valve cover if thats the case go buy a new gasket set if its oil filter get a new oil flite and screw it on if its rear seal or front seal or oil pan have someone do it
find out where the leak is coming from and... It.s probably a gasket. Replace it. Most common is head gasket or oil pan gasket. You should've mentioned the year and the application.
it depends on where the leak is at. if it,s the valve pan or oil pan gaskets then you might be able to snug up the bolts a little.
what ever you do don't use any think that say stop leak. those sh*ts plug up things that shouldn't be plugged. yes they might stop the leak but in the long run they cause more damage then good
Depends on where the leak is.

Well did your car die on you while driving? If so and the ';knocking'; noise is excessively loud, then you might have spun a main bearing on the crankshaft. If this is the case there is alot of work to be done, and with the money you still owe on the vehicle I would suggest you find someone who knows what they're doing mechanically to swap an engine. Saab parts are not cheap and I can only imagine what a engine would cost for it. Depending on where you live, you might be lucky and find a descent engine at a salvage yard. If this noise is minor however, then it could be something as simple as a bad lifter or broken valve spring.
ABSOLUTELY!! fix it. you can replace the motor if you have to! the battery or the alternator are bad. it is probably just making a noise because the oil is low!

Any quick fix for minor engine oil leak?

I'm currently selling my Jaguar and it has a slight oil leak. The problem is when I run the heat/AC and the car is not moving you can faintly smell burnt oil inside the car. My mechanic says it's very minor and since I'm selling the car it doesn't make sense to fix. I want to know if there is any quick fix such as adding something to the oil that would seal minor leaks.Any quick fix for minor engine oil leak?
Since you want to get rid of it so badly cover up the leak with tape and pray they don't turn on the HVAC by the time they find out its leaking the heat from the engine would have melted the glue holding the tape, therefore eliminating the evidence linking you to having knowledge of the oil leaking and trying to repair it.

Then again you could always tell the truth. If its so minor they probably wouldn't mind fixing it.Any quick fix for minor engine oil leak?
No, do not use any of those oil additives for sealing up leaks. They clog ports in the engine and cause premature wear to vital engine components. Its best to just have it fixed properly. You would be creating a world of problems for the person buying your vehicle.
my car did that too until i changed the valve pan gaskets. the oil was leaking down on the manifold and smoking. but if your selling it then try snugging up the bolts in the valve pan.

Is it normal for a car to leak oil after an oil change?

I had my oil change about a week ago and it's still leaking a couple drops of oil a day. Is this normal, or is my car leaking somewhere? I don't smell any oil burning when I turn on my engine though. can someone help?Is it normal for a car to leak oil after an oil change?
The two things that could leak, that they would have handled are the drain plug and the oil filter. Look carefully at those to see if that's where the oil comes from. They shouldn't be left leaking. The filter won't leak if they install it correctly. The drain plug should have been cleaned and had a new copper seal put on it before they replaced it. Have them look at that before you do anything to it. If they messed it up they need to fix it and not be able to blame you. If they spilled oil while filling the engine, that can drill off for quite a while- that's how oil is. There could be leaks from other places they should have not disturbed. Is it normal for a car to leak oil after an oil change?
It shouldn't be leaking at all.

You need to determine where the oil is coming from. Depending on what the oil runs onto as it drains, it's possible that some oil has settled in a frame crossmember or a suspension arm and could continue to drip for a day or two. You need to get underneath and find the source before you can tell whether you really have a leak or not.
It is not normal. I recommend taking it back to the place that did the oil change. They may have left the old oil filter gasket on or stripped the drain plug.
If it wasn't leaking before, it shouldn't be leaking after. Go back and ask them to check that everything was tightened properly.
A leak could be caused by overfilling the oil or not tightening the oil plug. Go back to the people who changed your oil and have them look at it.

My 2001 Toyota Corolla's front crankshaft seal has been leaking oil,it has 125,000 miles, has always been well maintained.I'm getting oil leakage from the seal, and I know because I see where the drivebelt is flinging oil.It leaks about a quart between oil changes.Anybody else have a problem like this with a Corolla? Was it a lot of work to replace?1998-2002 Corolla Owners:Is it a common problem to have the front crankshaft seal leak oil?
It is not common but it falls under the ';typical'; repair category. Read more at www.IDENTIFIX.com for the usual repairs on your Corolla..1998-2002 Corolla Owners:Is it a common problem to have the front crankshaft seal leak oil?
well DJ, 125K miles is a lot of miles. the crank pulley has rotated in one spot on the same seal 10 quadrillion times. Seals, just like brakes will wear out, even if the car is well maintained. If it was a domestic car, you'd be replacing the engine or transmission by now. Sometimes seals will leak much sooner- like on a waterpump. If it hasnt by 125k, feel very fortunate. Replacing the seal is not a major job for someone who knows and has the correct pullers to remove the pulley. If you do not posess these, it would be best to have it done for you as more damage can result if done incorrectly. Call for quotes, it shouldnt be that expensive.

I think I have an oil Leak on my Saturn?

I am a single mom and do most o the car repairs myself I am proud to say I have completed many task and the car is still on the road.lol I am having to put oil In my car about evey other week or so. I am thinking it is a leak. Should I replace the gasket first then see what happens ? Please help don't have the extra money to tak it to a shop. Any ideas would be great.I think I have an oil Leak on my Saturn?
%26lt;%26gt;First thing is to figure out what and where the leak is. Is there oil in the driveway (where you park the car)? If yes, get a large piece of clean cardboard (a stove or refrigerator box from an appliance store) and park your car on it overnight. In the morning look for oil drips and trace them to the source. That will help you determine your next step (pan gasket, head gasket, etc.). Is there a lot of blue smoke coming from the exhaust? If you run your finger around the inside of the tailpipe do you get a lot of rich, black soot? Then you are probably burning the oil. If so, get a compression test (cheap at a shop!) to see if it's a ring job (you'll have to decide if it's worth it). One last diagnostic you can do- open the radiator and see if there is oil floating on the antifreeze. If so, it's probably the head gasket which can be changed by you, if you are ambitious.I think I have an oil Leak on my Saturn?
%26amp; when you park put some paper under the car motor on the ground any oil leaks will show up look at where the most oil is driping because gravity is on youre side take a good look @ the motor from that point up to the top of the motor it should show up if not if not youre loosing out the back end when youre driving this is a sign of worn rings or boor thats the best i can say

When is an engine more likely to leak oil? When it is warm or cold?

Just curious, as I'm thinking of buying another car but want to know whether I should check for leaks when the car has been sitting for a while or after a test drive. When is an engine more likely to leak oil? When it is warm or cold?
Both, but in a cold engine the seals and gaskets shrink slightly creating a bigger gap for oil to move through. When the engine warms up the seals swell slightly. Also, a running engine will have the tendency to blow the oil back across itself instead of drip straight down where you'd notice it on the ground. So it's always good to look under the car on the pavement to see if there are any wet puddles of fresh oil or antifreeze. When is an engine more likely to leak oil? When it is warm or cold?
    warm...
    warm
Check where the car is parked. Are has been setting in the same place for sometime.
When a car is cold the oil is thick but in the normal leak places, when its hot the oil is thinner but all over the engine. So the best time to check it is about 30 to 45 minutes after a good test drive and make sure the oil level is full before you test drive it.
Generally it will leak when warm because the oil is thinner. But normally the oil will sit on the engine parts or frame and drip while the car sits. So give the engine compartment a close look and have a flash light handy to look way down in where it is dark and if the engine is cold you can reach in and if your hand comes out oily you will know what you have got.
Look around the engine for oil leaks and underneath the chassis. If you can see a visible oil leak... DON'T DRIVE THE CAR! Odds are it is going to leak oil when it is warm because the oil is thinned out.
Check underneath the car first for leaks and then run it for a while to heat the car up.Look where you thought the car was leaking before and it should be tell tale.Use this bit of info for your answer:At 32 degrees it takes approximately three minutes for 10-40 motor oil to reach proper viscosity to free flow through the engine. Read it again I said FREE FLOWING, not three minutes to reach the top of the motor, there is a difference.Think about that and you have your answer.
Mostly more when it's warm or hot, when the car is running the oil has a lot of pressure and the oil is thinner.
Oil can leak whether it's hot or cold so temperature really has nothing to do with it. It is more likley to show leaks after a good drive though b/c running the engine will get the oil circulating and if theres a leak anywhere you should be able to tell then. You should be able to tell just by looking under the car but it's always possible the seller has cleaned it to hide an oil leak.
Usually around the gasket of the head or the gasket to the oil pan. Sometimes the oil filter will leak if not put in properly. And it also can leak if the bolt to drain the oil was threaded wrong when put back in or not tight enough.

All above can be seen and happen hot or cold.

What is the difference between Lucas oil stabilizer and Lucas engine oil stop leak?

Both of the bottles say 100% petroleum and to substitue 20% of oil with the Lucas, but whats the difference. They are both really thick. What can I use to help my valve stem seals from leaking? What is the difference between Lucas oil stabilizer and Lucas engine oil stop leak?
I'll give you 100 dollars if you find 1 aftermarket solution to stop leaking valve stem seals. None of this junk works on any kind of vehicle to be honest with you. Your best bet for oil burning, bcz your valve stems are leaking is to replace your valve stems. What is the difference between Lucas oil stabilizer and Lucas engine oil stop leak?
Stabilizer stabilizes oil when you change oil, basically extending the oil life. Stop leak has teflon in it to help reseal pitted walls and seal areas. Stop leak is what you want to use from what you are wanting to do with valve stems. I hope this helps explain it a little better.

I have a 2003 Buick Rendezvous and the low oil alarm went off.

When I put oil in it, it poured out of the the bottom onto the concrete. What could be the cause of an oil leak?
there are a lot of variables with an oil leak. one of the most common is someone left the oil plug loose, if not then there are some seal/gasket

problems that you need to have looked at before you grenade your motor . the sooner the betterWhat could be the cause of an oil leak?
You need to get up under the car and look. It could be where you hit something and knock the oil pan out of place, it could be the oil seal, it could be where you have a hole in the pan, or it could be where the plug is not in. Hopefully, it is one of the options that are not costly.

The question is did you hit something recently that would have caused damage to the oil pan?
It sounds the oil pan plug has fell out, or you have a really bad leak on or around the oil pan. Don't try to drive it in this condition.
Could be hundreds of things like gaskets or seals, tow it to a shop.
Oil pan or maybe a main oil seal.

I have a oil leak on my car can ne1 help?

Oil has nothing to do with a thermostat. It could be a loose or old cracking hose. See if there is a trail of oil that leads you to the originating spot of problem. Ask friends what garage they use for their repairs and take it to a pro to fix it.I have a oil leak on my car can ne1 help?
Plastic trunking is only for the car wiring nothing to do with oil. I suggest you put a larrge piece of cardboard under the engine and let any leaking oil drip on it to give you a better indication of where the leak is.
OK you have an oil leak. Sounds like it's coming from the left hand side of the oil tank to me. E-mail me the vehicle and I'll repair it for a small fee.
I had a W reg corsa that had an oil leak... The pressure pump had gone and cost about 拢18 pound for a new one fitted. That was on the left side on like a wire. Im not really into cars but im sure its something simple. Hope this helps x
Take it to a garage and get a quote and then you will know what is wrong and what needs to be replaced and hopefully be able to do the job yourself
Bring it in to an auto-garage. They'll tell you what's wrong for free. It's then up to you if you want them to fix it or not.

  • What could cause oil to leak from the oil filter?

Besides a loose fit, I can't figure it out. The car is an '02 Chrysler Town %26amp; Country minivan. The leak is just a drip or two in the driveway each day, but it's bothering me.What could cause oil to leak from the oil filter?
it could be the oil filter housing, you may need a new gasket, also the oil pressure switch is sometimes located just above the filter, those things leak when they go bad. hope this helpsWhat could cause oil to leak from the oil filter?
The gasket needs to be cleaned , a small amount of light oil on the gasket before you replace filter, do not over tighten filter , hand tight only.....
please check again, this might not be a leak form the oil filter, but the engine oil or from the rear exhaust, its a mixture of oil and carbon particles, you can remove the exhaust and burn it, the mechanics will do this , this will remove the carbon partilces.
you may have a faulty oil filter, or the seal on the filter is twisted a little or not in place correctly. also as i have seen it done, make sure there was not an oil seal stuck on the housing when you put the new one on, and it has two rubber seals on it.
Bad gasket on top or a warped top plate. Discount store oil filters should be should avoided like the bubonic plague. They're often built with very thin sidewall material as well as the top covers. Keep in mind, oil filters from NAPA are made by the Wix filter company, among the top three in the country. The other two are AC-Delco and Purolater ( maker of Motorcraft oil filters)

Simply change it using a cup style oil filter wrench and make absolutely sure that the old filter gasket comes off. Coat the new filter gasket with clean motor oil.
take the filter off and get a new one and clean where it mounts real good and make sure that there isn't a gasket on the mounting surface as sometimes the gasket pulls off the old filter and sticks to the mounting surface, it's possible thats your problem.
Besides not being tight enough, I suppose it could be a faulty oil filter, maybe there's a hairline crack in it. Its usually the gasket though, did you put a thin layer of clean oil on it before you tightened it. *Did you use grease instead, this is no good. Is there an old gasket above the new gasket?
Most likely a gasket from a prior oil filter got stuck and is causing the new filter to create an improper seal. Next time you change the oil you should make sure that there aren't two gaskets on the oil filter.
Ok all that, also check if the filter is tight and if it has any holes in the filter from rocks/such.

Degrease the engine then trace the drip back. It may be coming from a (engine) seal

I have a 98 manual mustang and i think it has an oil leak?

I've been reading about it and places claim that when you have an oil leak blueish smoke comes out the tailpipe. there is no puddles anywhere and i dont see any dripping or anything . blue smoke means you are burning oil.

3 common causes for burning oil are :

well u didnt say how big a leak. if it is just a drop by drop thing it may be the oil pan drain bolt is leaking. this happens on occasion after a change. it may take a washer or a new drain bolt. put a piece of cardboard under the car and see where the drip hits. then get under car with flashlight and take a look straight up. good luck. btw ordinary liquid laundry detergent will clean oil off driveway.I have a oil leak on my ml320 i cant see where its coming from?
if you're gonna take it back to the people who did the oil change last, let them fix it. if you wanna fix it, i would start at the oil drain plug or the oil filter. sometimes those things are left loose. a new washer or plug should do the trick. be careful though, sometimes these plugs strip and on mercedes this can cost you a lot of money because a new oil PAN needs to be put on. i suggest you leave it alone and take it back where you had it serviced last

Why does my chain saw leak oil ?

Every time I put my chainsaw in the case it leaks oil. I am not overfilling it.Why does my chain saw leak oil ?
Does your saw have an automatic chain oiler that needs adjustment? It may be excess oil dripping off the bar after you shut the saw off. Make sure the oil reservoir is not cracked and, as previously mentioned, that the filler cap is sealing. Why does my chain saw leak oil ?
On some saws there are small plastic lines that run into and out of the oil tank. They run through small holes in the case and could be worn. Just something else to check.
Probably the cap not sealing, I used to own one that did the same thing.
you may want to check if the cap actually has a rubber seal on it.

Could be brake fluid or axel oil. Take it in to prevent further damage.
It could be one of 2 things. Depending on the type of oil, you could have blown a wheel cylinder causing brake fluid to leak. This is assuming you have drum brakes on the rear, I am not too familiar with Jag's.

If not, then it would be a Rear Axle Seal. Neither are necessarily uncommon repairs to have to do.

If the oil is thin, almost like paint thinner, it is brake fluid. If it is thick, smells really bad, and is almost gooey, it is gear oil from the axle seal.

  • What's all involved in fixing an oil leak on my 1990 Acura Integra ?

The oil is leaking out of the top left side of the motor near the cam shaft behind a black plastic cover. Has anyone had this happen to them and is it easy to fix ? I'm trying to be specific as I can when describing this. Any help would be much appreciated. What's all involved in fixing an oil leak on my 1990 Acura Integra ?
On any Honda or Acura, I recommend you buy the service manuals from www.helminc.com which will give you the exact breakdown of what you have and tell you, in explicit detail, how to do the job.

I think what you have is a SOHC (Single OverHead Cam) engine that has developed a leak at the camshaft. Depending on how many miles are on the engine, this would be a good time to do a timing belt change as you will have to gain access to the valves under the valve cover anyway. Here's the things I would change simulaneously:

    1. Timing Belt

    2. Valve cover gasket

    3. Spark plug seals

    4. camshaft end plug

None of this is especially hard but it will absorb an afternoon changing the timing belt yourself. You will hear recommendations to change the water pump when you do the timing belt along with the belt tensioner but I have never had a failure with those and am willing and able to repeat the process should they ever fail.

I've had a distributor seal (O-ring) fail before too which puts a leak pretty close to where you are describing.

Good luckWhat's all involved in fixing an oil leak on my 1990 Acura Integra ?
I would start by draining all the oil.....then I'd wait a few minutes to see if that helped.
it is leaking thru the cam end plug on the exhaust cam . that cam end plug part number is 12513-P30-000 . and yes they do leak after awhile . when you change the cam end plug , you may just also replace the spark plug tube seals . part number is 12342-PT2-000 .
sounds like a valve cover gasket, they are just a few bucks, but you need glue to put them back on
You must have the DOHC. I had a 90 Integra LS but never had leakage from that area of the engine. Sounds like your head gasket is leaking.
I also own a 1990 Acura Integra that I bought yesterday. I figured out that it also has an oil leak. You remove 7 bolts that hold the valve cover down, take the old gasket off and put on a new one. Then reattach the valve cover.
I'm not a mechanic but i think it will be too hard to say without seeing it first, the spot you say the leak is coming may be serious i would take it to the dealership to have it looked at,

Will a small oil leak cause you to fail your car emissions test?

I keep putting off fixing it because I fear it will be expensive. The oil doesn't leak to the ground at all. It takes me 4 months to get down to the minimum level of oil. I think it leaks elsewhere into the engine and just gets ';eaten.';Will a small oil leak cause you to fail your car emissions test?
    Not likely.

    However oil burning might. Worn rings or bad valve seals will allow oil to enter into the combustion chamber. This will increase the HC levels some, and I believe this is the term you're using when you are saying the oil is ';eaten';

Does the smoke out of your tail pipe look a little bluish? Usually means oil is burning in the combustion chamber.

Burning oil will also typically result in a lot of soot and eventually clog emission components such as the EGR valve. It will also leave a residue on the catalytic converter. All the reasons why we don't see many diesel engines in the US.Will a small oil leak cause you to fail your car emissions test?
when you park your car, if you can not see it dripping from below then it will pass in the state of texas, i cant speak for anywhere else.

I need a mechanic to answer. I have a engine oil leak in a 1995 Mercury Cougar (V8) and I want to fix myself?

    The leak is oil.

It's in the front left of the engine.

It's leaking daily.I need a mechanic to answer. I have a engine oil leak in a 1995 Mercury Cougar (V8) and I want to fix myself?
You need to identify exactly where the leak is coming from. It could be a bad seal/gasket or it could be a crack in the block.

If it is a seal, then you will have to take apart that section and replace the seal. Gaskets are the same. It is a fairly easy repair, but it will take some time the first time you try it.

If it is your engine block, there isn't much you can do. There are some parts stores that sell ';patches';, but you pretty much have to get a new block.

Until you are able to determine what it is, try replacing your engine oil with a heavier weight oil, like 10W40. It is a thicker oil, which makes it harder to leak through small openings.I need a mechanic to answer. I have a engine oil leak in a 1995 Mercury Cougar (V8) and I want to fix myself?
use simple green concentrate to clean engine really good all the grease and grime off. rinse off with water and let dry. once dry place cardboard undernieth to pinpoint leak. . . once leak is found ( which will be where two parts meet) drain oil take the two part s apart. clean mating surfaces and install new gasket and sealer. tighten bolts starting in the middle and work way out. tighten only a little at a time . never too tight , . fill with oil and run if it leaks tighten a lil bit more
It could be your main seal. That you most likely couldn't do yourself. You would have to take the whole top end apart. On the bright side, they do sell a product ((at any car store)) that you put in with your oil and it stops the leak. its a hit or miss though. I hope it works!
Have you verified it's not just a hole in your oil pan, or the plug isn't sealing properly. If it's leaking right out of the engine then you've got bigger problems.
Check your valve cover seal. Very easy and cheap to replace, takes about 15 dollars and twenty minutes of time.
change gaskets...first off....mainly the problem...then check screws....good luck...oh yeh....it maybe the problem with a seal behind your drive..belt....harmonic balancer seal

Depends on where the leak is, if its on your oil pan you could probably do it yourself for the price of a gasket...if its in the head gasket it will cost a little more and is harder to do...maybe $200 to have some one do it or if its not too hard to get to you could do it yourself for the price of a gasket...you could get the gaskets at auto zone or order on line and save a couple of dollars. gaskets should cost between 15 and 30 bucks. if its somewhere else it could cost big bucks in labor to get to.How much would a oil leak cost to get fixed?
It depends on where the leak is. It could be as little as $100 for a valve cover gasket, $300 for a pulley seal to $600 for a head gasket or $1200 to replace a cracked engine block. Chances are if the seller did all that work to it already and didn't fix the leak, the problem is a major one he wants to pass off to someone else.
The seal may cost you 5 dollars the time a effort to get to it could cost you a 1000 dollars. There is no way to know for sure unless you take it to a mechanic and have them give you a estimate. There are allot of seals than could leak and most likely has more than one.
A oilpan gasket cost around 15 to 40 dollars, and on some cars are very easy to replace, but on some cars they are a pain to put in so it would be better to replace it your self.
    As much as $600 .

Ford oil pan drain plugs now have neoprene O rings up against the hex flange. Run your car up on jack stands or a set of Rhino Ramps. The right side is the front of the motor (pass side) and there are many seals etc..... could be a front crank seal.... or...?
The fastest way to locate the leak is to have flourescent dye put in your engine oil and then the technician uses a black light to locate the leak. It's cheap and fast if it's not obvious where the leak is coming from.
That's where the drain plug is located. Apply the parking brake, raise the vehicle %26amp; place on jack stands. For some reason people seem to strip the drain plug. Check the plug is tight. If it's tight %26amp; leaking, then remove %26amp; fit with a copper washer.

Thick oil well NOT stop a oil leak only slow it down .. only a new gasket or tighten up the bolts in the problem area well stop it. If its burning the oil then only a rebuild well fix the problem depending on where it is coming from.

http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/1309728748.htmlHow much would a oil leak cost to get fixed?

My 2001 ford taurus is leaking oil from the passenger side of the engine. Where is this leak from?

The leak happens when the car is stationary. My 2001 ford taurus is leaking oil from the passenger side of the engine. Where is this leak from?
Ford oil pan drain plugs now have neoprene O rings up against the hex flange. Run your car up on jack stands or a set of Rhino Ramps. With the motor running and a drop light in your hand inspect the oil pan and crank pulley end (right side.) If your lucky its a valve cover gasket. In any event it's easy to find but you've got to get it up and get underneath to find it.My 2001 ford taurus is leaking oil from the passenger side of the engine. Where is this leak from?

I have a 1985 Toyota supra and it has an oil leak inbetween the engine and transmission, can I fix it myself?

I want to repair myself, how would I do it?I have a 1985 Toyota supra and it has an oil leak inbetween the engine and transmission, can I fix it myself?
you could but its probably going to be really hard. i have the same problem on my car , and i would have to drop the engine out to fix it.I have a 1985 Toyota supra and it has an oil leak inbetween the engine and transmission, can I fix it myself?
If your mechanically inclined you might be able to. What it would take would be either removing the engine or the transmission and changing the rear seal on the motor. That's wheres it's going to be leaking from...But check the oil pan just in case.

Is it important to fix an oil leak?

yesIs it important to fix an oil leak?
It really depends on how severe it leaks. If it leaks something like 1 drop every now and then, I'd say no. If it drops continuously, then I 'd say yes, you better get it fixed soon.Is it important to fix an oil leak?
Next time you change the oil and filter try adding some Lucas oil treatment after awhile that stuff stops most minor leaks with ease.Heres a link

Hope that helps and best of luck.
No - as long as it is not big and you constantly check the oil. Otherwise you ruin your engine. It may be something as simple as a valve cover gasket which would be worth fixing because it should be relatively inexpensive.
    Nah.
Yes, because if its in your car, it will at least drip on the ground. If it's in your hair, No, just wrap a towel around your neck to absorbe the oil.
yes because if you forget to check the leavel and you run it low you can kill the egine
    lol.....yes!
most defiantly the oil is the life blood to your engine will die if it all leaks out and should be kept clean as well the better you take care of your ride the better it will take care of you peace out lots of luck

What is a thick oil for my car. I have a slight oil leak?

you can get royal purpleWhat is a thick oil for my car. I have a slight oil leak?
Don't deviate from the recommended oil. You won't alter the leak at all, but you may do the engine harm. Forget all the exotic 'cures' that people will suggest. All ineffective and a total waste of money. When the leak gets more than slight and you are starting to have to add oil, say, weekly, get it fixed. It may only be a simple leaky gasket anyway. What is a thick oil for my car. I have a slight oil leak?
20-w-50 is a good oil but it wont stop a leak on it it may not even slwo it down ,the only way to stop that is have it repared or run it dry and ruin an engine, changing to a thicker oil wont stop a leak on one, good luck.
    HI

Thick oil well NOT stop a oil leak only slow it down .. only a new gasket or tighten up the bolts in the problem area well stop it. If its burning the oil then only a rebuild well fix the problem depending on where it is coming from.

    good luck

Go to a parts store and get a can of RENEW. It mixes with your oil and makes old gaskets swell . Remember, its a temporary fix but it works.

Be sure to get the can for the number of cylinders in your car.

  • Does a coil pack for a 91 buick leak oil? can you get stranded if it is not fixed?

What are the signs of an coil pack replacement and what should the average cost be?Does a coil pack for a 91 buick leak oil? can you get stranded if it is not fixed?
No oil does not come from the coil pack. If you have an oil leak around the area its probably from some thing else. If it goes out you can be stranded. If you engine starts misfiring then that could be a sign of the coil pack going out, but it could be a number of ignition components.Does a coil pack for a 91 buick leak oil? can you get stranded if it is not fixed?
more likely it's oil from something else, but. yes

ignition coils contain oil, it helps keep them cool. I'd clean it off, and if it gets oily again, get a replacement
it has a rhort in it It tryying to tell you help sesyou canget stranded

How do I fix this oil leak?

My 2000 Explorer is leaking a bit of oil. I took it to the local mechanic, who's a good guy (but foreign and very hard to undertsand)--he ';fixed'; it and didn't charge me a dime. But the leak is still there! I went back and asked him about it, and he said the oil pan needed a new pin--but to wait until the next time the oil needed to be changed (which is a few months off). I didn't really understand his reasoning, and I don't want to wait. Thoughts/suggestions? Thanks! How do I fix this oil leak?
Aint no such animal as a pin on da pan!

He probably was trying to tell you the leak was at the pan (pin) and he tightened up the drain plug on the pan (pin). I know what you mean 'bout them furiners. I can't hardly understand them yankees that done moved into my area!

Te reason to wait until the next oil change is the drain plug (and he may call this a pin) has a bad gasket on it. If he removed it to change the gasket, you would loose all the oil. It has to come off at the next oil change, and he must think the leak is not severe enough to require immediate attention (and adde expense). Sounds like this guy might be looking out for you. Prob'ly oughta keep him as your mechanic. If the language thing comes up again, keep asking til you understand, or have him write it down. How do I fix this oil leak?
well if you have to put in a new pin then your oil is going to come out anyway, so you can wait or change your oil now and replace the pin, pretty much the only option. sorry.
This guy sounds like he's good.... keep him! He was probably saying pan, as in oil pan leaking.... if that's to be fixed and its not such a big leak, he was just telling you to wait till you need the oil changed, so not to waste it since its gonna be changed when he replaces the oil pan gasket. But I would like to add this.... KEEP A CHECK ON THE OIL LEVEL, maybe once a week should be good. Don't want to add a engine to that oil pan. By fixed it, he probably tried tightening down on the oil pan, which sometimes fixes it, since the bolts can loosen under the heat and cold they see. But it didn't do it. You could just go ahead and get him to do it now if you want, he had good intentions.
the seal on the plug in the pan could be worn or the gasket on youre pan could be worn
