How do go about finding an oil leak?

take a close look on the engine of wet spots and usually the highest point of the leak will tell you where it is coming from. if not, clean the engine, then start it up and look for wet spots. How do go about finding an oil leak?
Sometimes it is hard to find a oil leak unless it is visible. Somethimes it could be your valve cover gasket, distrubtor o ring. If it is real bad sometimes you need to get it steamed cleaned first to determine where the leak is. Also there is an oil dye that you can put in the vehicle which will tell where the oil leak is coming from. It could be the rear main seal, axle seal anything. One easy trick I learned is to put a sheet of cardboard under your front end when you park it at night. The next morning remove the cardboard and look to see where any drips are at in relation to the engine compartment. Gravity is very helpful in this process, in that the drips will come straight down. The thing to bear in mind with oil, is it will ';stick'; to the side of the engine in its downward travel. Also look for ';pooling'; (puddles of oil) on the top of the engine. If a leak is there, the pools will be close to it.
it may not be easy but try this

Take it down to a car was and Power Wash the motor and get all the old oil and grease off the motor then drive it home and look under the hood and see if you see any oil comeing from some place in my case it was the valve cover gasket witch is not hard to fix and it kind of cheap to buy at the parts store or you can try some oil stop leak

good luck
i own a repair shop, and if you take and wipe the engine off with a dry rag or something in the area that you think its leaking from,,you can start it,,then cut it off and this will pretty much tell you where its leaking from,,once you find it,,then you can determine the best way to repair it,,good luck with it,,merry x-mas.
