Is it ok to use an oil leak stop additive?

my mitsubishi is leaking oil abit nothing serious. it's 1999 159k miles. i don't want to spend $$ fixing it i plan on a new car next year. so i have seen this additives at autozone, etc that stops oil leaks. are they ok to use?Is it ok to use an oil leak stop additive?
I'd be careful with that stuff. It basically works by creating a ';clot'; where the leak is. Problem is, this property isn't necessarily limited to just the leak, especially if you use too much of it. It can eventually create clots throughout the entire lubrication system (especially where oil passageways are small), not allowing the engine to lubricate itself properly and causing a lot of damage.

I would get it fixed correctlyIs it ok to use an oil leak stop additive?
Old Me: ';You should never use a -Stop Leak!- It will only give out at some point.. get it fixed the RIGHT WAY!!';

New Me: I have FIXED CARS with Stop Leak. Case in Point: My 1991 Ford Escort.

I also killed it the next day, but that was My fault.. Hint Hint, Wink Wink: I didnt want a car that could not handle the HIGHWAY!!!

.. They WILL Work.. KIND OF. (I had that Escort patched up Nice, im a little Mad at myself about it. Oh well, my New car gets my Attention now.)

... SO you CAN, and with LUCK it will work.

Also, if a can/bottle (Rislone, BARS.. Use LUCAS) Doesnt do it.. youcan just Change the Oil and get it fixed 'The Right Way.'

... 1999? Try the Bottle first, see what it does.

Some leaks can be stopped kind of easy.. Some are BAD NEWS.

It is hard to tell.
If the leak is through an oil seal or gasket and is not too bad, then the stop leak has a chance of working. Since your car has 159k miles, I wouldn't worry too much about the additive causing damage.
Ive found that switching the car to high mileage oil works very good for oil leaks and oil burning.
some people will argue its bad.

but just try it, worst that can happen is that it doesnt seal the leak.
