My van has an oil leak which seems to drip all the way from the front to the back of the van any one know why?

I got out of work and notice my van was leaking alot of oil I looked under the chasis and notice it was leaking in several places. The leaks came from under the oil pan it seems and all through the back of the chassis near the back wheel its a big leak because I just put 2 quarts and its almost gone...is it normal to have a big leak like that out of nowere and leaking in several places?My van has an oil leak which seems to drip all the way from the front to the back of the van any one know why?
It's not probably leaking in several places but it is probably leaking backwards on the car as you drive. If it is a bad enough leak it will look like it is leaking from several places. Not common to start leaking in several different places. What it sounds like to me is a large leak that gets blown all over your undercarriage by the wind while you drive. This is very common. Generally speaking you can usually find leaks this big at the rear main seal. Without knowing anything about your vehicle I would say that is the best starting place to look. What you can do is wash the entire undercarriage with a garden hose so all the oil is gone. Top off the engine, and then let the van idle. After a few minutes get underneath it (while it's running) and see if you can pinpoint the leak.





P.S. Rear main seal is where the engine and transmission come together.

If this leak suddenly started and has not been previously leaking oil it could be the oil pressure switch. They had a seal between the plastic and metal halves and will start leaking and leaking significantly. Also the oil filter can loosen if it wasn't tightened properly.

The wind and such usually blows it all over the place. You must clean it up a bit and then start it and look for the leak. some big leaks start quick and cover the whole undernieth of the car/truck. Look for other things like a loose oil filter and such also. always good to check the simple things first.

The engine and a slow oil leak won't matter until you get your next oil change and they fix the problem.
check the sending unit for the gauge
Seal on oil filter may be cracked, sending unit above the filter, head gasket
its kind of an old car, it may be your gaskets starting to give out. whats the mileage and condition of the engine?

Hello manny.How you doing today.The first order of business is to pressure wash the entire tractor.If you have lower and side panel access covers,you should remove these now. Use a degreaser and then rince the tractor completely.Seeing as how we are lookin for oil leaks,we may as well look at the entire system.A clean machine will help to show all kinds of of little problems that can be fixed before they turn into big problems.Once the engine area is clean,any little oil deposites will show up quickly.Now wipe off any dirt or oil that was missed by washing,and shine up the engine area a little.Now you can start the engine and look for leaks.Sometimes these leaks take a while to show up, but if there is a leak it will show itself.let it run for half an hour,outside of course,and periodically check for oil on the sides,or the botom drain plug etc.Now would be a good time to check the front end and grease any bearings that are easily accessable now that the panels are out of the way.Once some oil is detected ,it is easy to trace it to its source on a clean engine.I hope that i was helpfull in answering your question.Good luck with your project and happy turfin.BarneyI have an oil leak on my john deer mower(golf turf equipment) question is on locating the oil leak(engine oil)
All mowers, roto-tillers, weed-eaters, etc need regular maintainance, ie, periodic tightening of bolts, nuts, and screws, due to the extreme vibration they cause during operation. Check the oil level in your engine, overfilling crankcase can cause leakage. Clean the engine very well. Spray degreaser from an auto supply center works well. After cleaning and allowing sufficient time to dry, start engine and place it in a location where it will blow as much dust as possible. The dust will adhere to the oil leaking out of the engine. Re-tighten bolts or replace gasket in leak area being extremely careful not to over-tighten any fasteners, which could cause further damage. Re-clean any leaky areas and re-test for leaks.
Clean the engine, run the engine and the exact location of the leak will appear. Always look at the highest point. can be =- 4 things.

probably the oil pan gasket is leaking.
start with the oil filter and the crankcase bolt. If you get under the truck you should be able to see where the oil is coming from!
check the timing seal or the cover gasket.
if it leaks when facing down hill look at the front main crank seal. if it leaks when facing uphill look at the rear main crank seal. sometimes crank seal leaks are tale tale signs of main bearings going out, but if the seal is just dry rotted i wouldnt worry about the bearings.

I would not worry, older cars do this.That is what my mechanic told me. Just need to check the oil once a week. The oil leak could be from anywhere. Usually they literally wash the engine and try to see where NEW oil spots are forming.





Depending on where it could be as cheap as $50 if you did it yourself.





If they could see the oil leak, it is most likely a gasket (oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket). This is fairly cheap and easy. But this is NOT the FULL extent of the source of the leak.

Don't try using those ';stop leak'; products. They do not work and actually do more harm than good. Take the vehicle to a reputable shop and have it checked. Typically it will be either the oil pan or the valve cover causing the leak. You need to check your oil level more frequently for the sake of your engine.
if its only going through a quart during every oil change then its cheaper to not fix it. especially a 94 topaz. oil seals back then were made cheaply and were not durable so the engine is gonna leak eventually. next time you change the oil mabee use a thcker oil. it will cost a bit because the mechanic may have to remove the engine to fix the leak.
Lol are you kidding me? Nobody can see your car over the net NOR give you an estimate. Get it to a shop and get an estimate.
If its only losing one quart between oil changes on a 14 year old car, I would not worry about it.Just check it often.
the oil pan bolts might just need tighten or the oil filter is leaking.

Engine sweat or beginning of an oil leak?

I have a Vauxhall Corsa 2001 which i purchased a month back it has done over 72,000 which isnt really bad for its age- but today i noticed a mark on my drive which looked like a sweat- It was not a puddle, i felt it and it was oil- could this be early signs of an oil leak?

Engines don't sweat. I wouldn't worry too much but try and ascertain where it is coming from. If it's just an engine oil leak it's not too serious, though it should be investigated as it will probably get worse with time.

open the bonnet and look near the left hand front at the top of the engine they should be a sensor with a single wired plug on it this is the oil pressure switch this is usually the culprit.

engines or transmission do not sweat oil, they leak. almost any car will leak a bit with age. First you need to see if it is transmission or engine oil then check your oil levels on a regular basis. If really worried then take to a mechanic to trace source and fix. Me I would not worry about it unless it leaks a lot and the oil levels drop quickly like in a week or two.
You can't do any worse than have a look round the engine/gearbox.





It should be obvious,i.e wet near the leak. It may be something as simple as a rocker gasket or loose oil filter.





Or just tell everyone it's not a leak,it's sweat from all the power it makes........!! ;)
Car engines do not sweat. They leak oil, coolant, brake/clutch fluid, water from air conditioning units but never sweat. Suggest you keep an eye on it, check oil coolant brake/clutch fluid levels. If low top up and monitor loss. If needs be seek Professional advice.
Taste and feel it. If its sweet its coolant, most likely from the radiator top hose, left hand side of radiator. Or if its oil, its likely the sump plug or the gearbox.
lift the bonnet and take off the oil cap where you would put oil in, and see if there is what looks like foam (water and oil mixed) if so there could be a gasket leak, cylinder head etc.
Engines don't sweat like that. See the color of fluid, as different colors mean different leaks.
